Garth Brooks Files Legal Complaint for Extortion and Defamation Against Makeup Artist Prior to Her Assault Lawsuit
Garth Brooks has filed an anonymous legal complaint against his former makeup and hair stylist, alleging attempts of extortion. The complaint, submitted on September 13 in the U.S. District Court in Mississippi, states that the accuser, now identified as “Jane Roe,”threatened to “publicly file”a lawsuit against him based on “fabricated allegations.”Jane Roe had recently accused Brooks of sexual assault and battery.
The complaint reportedly alleges that the intention behind the lawsuit was to “irreparably harm”Garth’s reputation unless he paid her millions. Roe is said to have approached the singer-songwriter for financial assistance after experiencing monetary difficulties.
Brooks indicated in his complaint that, while he initially met some of Roe’s financial demands, her requests for increased compensation and medical benefits led him to refuse. Subsequently, when Brooks denied her further demands, Roe allegedly resorted to making “false and outrageous allegations of sexual misconduct.”
In Roe’s lawsuit, filed on October 3, she purports that Garth Brooks raped her, sent sexually explicit messages, exposed himself, and solicited her to engage in a threesome with him and his wife, Trisha Yearwood.
Garth Brooks’ Preemptive Complaint Seeks “Declaratory Judgment” of Innocence
In his preemptive complaint against Jane Roe, Garth Brooks noted that he had received multiple demand letters requesting “millions of dollars.”These requests allegedly came from Roe in July and August. In his legal filing, he seeks a “declaratory judgment that [the] Defendant’s allegations against him of sexual misconduct are untrue.
As one of the wealthiest country music stars, Brooks also requested compensatory and punitive damages in his filing, expressing a preference for a jury trial.
However, Roe’s legal team responded to Brooks’ initial complaint with one of their own, stating:
“With a draft of Ms. Roe’s California sexual assault complaint in hand, Mr. Doe [Brooks] raced to this courthouse in an obvious attempt to further control and bully his sexual assault victim.”
Roe’s counter-complaint characterized Garth Brooks’ legal action as a “frivolous action”that occurred after she sought to hold him responsible for his “conduct and sexual violence.”She alleges that the country singer has “improperly utilized the Declaratory Judgment Act”to thwart the truth from emerging.
Since the allegations arose, Garth Brooks has maintained his innocence and publicly denied any form of wrongdoing. In a statement made on October 4, following the news of Roe’s lawsuit, he expressed feeling “hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales”for not paying “many millions of dollars.”
Brooks articulated his current situation as “like having a loaded gun waved in my face,”explaining his refusal to pay Roe any sum of money as “hush money,”which he believes implies admitting to actions he is “incapable”of committing.
Meanwhile, Jane Roe’s attorneys, Douglas H. Wigdor, Jeanne M. Christensen, and Hayley Baker, expressed confidence in a statement to CNN that Garth Brooks would be held accountable for his actions.
