GameStop Shuttering Stores Across the United States

Overview of GameStop Closures

  • GameStop is quietly shutting down numerous stores across the U.S., catching customers and employees off guard.
  • The retailer’s physical outlets have diminished by nearly a third, illustrating a sharp decline.
  • Social media platforms are buzzing with reports of these closures, signaling potential challenges ahead for GameStop.

GameStop is engaging in a substantial reduction of its retail presence, with many store closures occurring suddenly, leaving devoted customers feeling dismayed. Despite the lack of an official statement regarding these closures from GameStop, there has been a noticeable uptick in reports from customers and employees documenting these shut-downs on social media outlets since the beginning of the year.

Founded over 44 years ago as Babbage’s, GameStop has evolved into the world’s leading retailer for new and pre-owned video games. The company opened its first store in Dallas, Texas in 1980, backed by former U.S. presidential contender Ross Perot. At its peak in 2015, it boasted a network of over 6,000 locations globally and generated approximately $9 billion in annual revenue. However, as of February 2024, the retailer’s physical stores have dwindled to around 3,000 in the United States, marking an almost one-third decline, driven by the industry’s shift towards digital sales, according to ScrapeHero.

Following a December 2024 regulatory disclosure to the Securities and Exchange Commission that indicated further store closures were on the horizon, both employees and customers have taken to social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit to share their experiences regarding closed stores. One Twitter user, @one-big-boss, expressed sadness over the shutdown of a favorite location known for affordable games and consoles, suggesting the closure may signal further struggles for less profitable stores. Employees have echoed these sentiments, with one Canadian worker noting “unreasonable targets”set forth by company leadership as factors in assessing store viability.

Continuing Trend of Store Closures

The pattern of store closures reflects an ongoing trend that highlights the retailer’s challenges. A report by Reuters in March 2024 forecasted a grim outlook for GameStop, revealing that the company had shut down 287 locations in the previous year. This came on the heels of fourth-quarter revenue figures from 2023, which indicated a nearly 20 percent drop of roughly $432 million compared to the same quarter in 2022.

In recent years, various strategies have been proposed both internally and externally to revitalize GameStop amid shifting consumer preferences toward online purchasing. The company has explored diverse initiatives, including expanding its range of gaming-related merchandise and attempting to enter entirely new sectors, encompassing phone trade-ins and trading card grading. Notably, in 2021, GameStop received an unexpected boost from a group of retail investors on Reddit, a story chronicled in the Netflix documentary, Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga, as well as the film Dumb Money.
