Game Developer Claims AI Has No Value in Creative Pursuits

The Impact of AI in Game Development: Perspectives from Industry Leaders

As we near the end of 2025, the conversation surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies across various sectors, particularly in game development. Historically, the gaming industry has harnessed the power of AI to create vibrant and immersive virtual environments. However, the recent surge in generative AI capabilities, paired with escalating production budgets and timelines, has prompted some developers to consider how AI might streamline costs and accelerate development processes.

Insights from Epictellers Entertainment

In a recent discussion with Epictellers Entertainment, a Spanish independent game developer working on the cRPG Starfinder: Afterlight, we delved into the complex relationship between AI and creativity in game design. Richard Pillosu, CEO and co-founder of the studio, expressed a clear stance on the matter. While he sees the potential for AI to assist with mundane tasks, he firmly believes that creative aspects of game development should remain untouched by AI intervention.

The problem with AI is that it seems to want to do the things we want to do: inventing characters, crafting worlds, and designing games. This is where the joy of game development lies. I would prefer an AI that could manage my household chores, allowing me to focus on creativity.

Pillosu emphasized the intrinsic joy that comes from game development and creation, stating, “There’s no point in using AI for any creative endeavor.”His sentiments reflect a desire for human ingenuity to lead the creative process, asserting that AI should not encroach on the artistic instincts that fuel game innovations.

Hideo Kojima’s Perspective on AI

Renowned video game designer Hideo Kojima also weighed in on the topic, referring to AI as “a friend”that could aid him in enhancing his creative work. Echoing the views of Pillosu, Kojima emphasized the importance of using AI to alleviate tedious tasks, thereby preserving time and energy for creative endeavors. This alignment reveals a common theme among creatives: a preference for AI to serve as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for creative work.

Actor Feodor Chin on AI’s Role

Actor Feodor Chin, in a recent interview, shared a similar viewpoint, stating that while he recognizes the value of AI as a technological tool, he firmly believes it should never substitute human creativity. His perspective reinforces the idea that technology should enhance, rather than replace, human roles in creative fields.

The Road Ahead for AI in Game Development

As the games industry continues to evolve alongside advancements in AI technology, the crucial question remains: can the sector leverage these innovations to enhance human creativity without undermining jobs? Observing the industry’s responses and adaptations over time will provide insight into the delicate balance between technological advancement and the preservation of creative spirit.
