FTC Announces $126 Million Refunds for Fortnite Players
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has revealed that it will distribute an impressive sum of over $126 million in refunds to Fortnite players who encountered unwanted charges. This initiative aims to reimburse players impacted by deceptive purchasing practices associated with the popular game. Furthermore, the FTC is extending the claims process, allowing players, along with their parents or guardians, to apply for additional compensation until July 9, 2025.
Background of Refunds
This round of refunds follows a previous issuance that took place in December 2024, where the FTC processed 629, 344 refunds due to what they classified as “deceptive”practices by Epic Games. These practices led many players to unwittingly make purchases for in-game items.
Details on the Current Refund Distribution
While the FTC previously disclosed that the average refund amount was approximately $114 per individual in December, they have not yet provided an average figure for the current round of refunds. The ongoing claims process means that the average refund may fluctuate as more claims are submitted. Starting today, the FTC has initiated the distribution of 969, 173 refunds, which will be delivered via PayPal
or by check.
For those who opted for a refund via check, the FTC advises recipients to cash their checks within 90 days. In contrast, individuals who receive their refunds through PayPal should ensure they redeem those funds within 30 days to avoid any complications.
Total Refund Amounts and Future Processes
The claims process originally commenced in September 2023. The first phase lasted until January 2024. However, players who missed that opportunity now have a chance, as the claims window has been reopened, providing an extension for an additional two weeks to secure their refund from Epic Games.
Players are encouraged to respond swiftly while this new claims period is available to ensure they maximize their opportunities for compensation.
