Warning! Spoilers ahead for the 2025 One Chicago crossover.
The 2025 One Chicago crossover prominently featured Trudy Platt, yet her portrayal sparked frustration among fans, particularly in light of her character’s treatment in Chicago PD. Trudy, played by Amy Morton, is one of the last original characters from the franchise, having been a key presence in every special since their inception. Though she technically operates within the 21st Police District, she has played significant roles across episodes of both Chicago Med and Chicago Fire. However, most storylines tie back to her interactions with Hank Voight’s Intelligence unit.
I am a devoted follower of all One Chicago series, but Chicago PD holds a special place in my heart, largely due to my affinity for police procedural dramas. Initially, I had reservations about Trudy’s character, feeling she was overly harsh on patrol officers Kevin Atwater and Kim Burgess. Yet, as the series progressed, I grew to understand and admire her role on-screen. Despite this evolution, the handling of Trudy in Chicago PD’s twelfth season leaves much to be desired, and the crossover only exacerbates the issues.
Trudy’s Perilous Situation in the 2025 One Chicago Crossover
The Crossover Puts Trudy and Mouch Under Extreme Circumstances

The events of the 2025 One Chicago crossover kicked off with Chicago Fire, as Firehouse 51 responded to a critical call downtown. Before this urgent response, newly-promoted Mouch McHolland shared personal challenges at home with Trudy, setting the stage for their tense day both as first responders and as partners. While I appreciate that their narrative takes center stage, the execution of their storyline feels superior compared to the experiences of other couples like Burgess and Adam Ruzek or Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide.
However, one aspect of Trudy’s arc has left me dissatisfied: her rushed transport to the hospital as she battles for her life. This scenario not only raises concerns about her fate but also feels like a disservice to her character development. It’s evident that Chicago PD has underutilized Trudy for some time, often sidelining her amidst a shift away from narrative arcs featuring patrol officers. The crossover offered a chance to showcase her strengths, yet most of her presence was spent confined to a hospital bed.
The Need for a More Powerful Role for Trudy
A More Engaging Story Could Have Enhanced the Crossover

There were certainly more innovative ways to utilize Trudy in the crossover. Subjecting her to a serious health crisis not only sidelines her during critical moments but also misses an opportunity for the narrative to shine. Instead, I would have preferred to see Trudy actively engaged in the investigation, particularly given her established connections to the case’s antagonist, Lauren Bates. This approach could have both deepened the storyline and provided Mouch’s character with substantial material to work with.
While Trudy’s near-fatal ordeal did allow Christian Stolte to showcase his acting range, it also meant that Amy Morton was deprived of her moment in the spotlight. Viewers have witnessed Trudy’s strength and depth throughout her journey on One Chicago; the 2025 crossover could have brilliantly highlighted her capabilities. Rather than merely playing a supporting role in Hank’s investigations, she should have taken a leading part in cracking the case, employing her significant detective skills.
The Case for Enhancing Trudy’s Role in Chicago PD Season 12
Trudy Deserves More Compelling Story Arcs

Despite my disappointment in how the 2025 crossover handled Trudy Platt, there lies a silver lining: Chicago PD’s twelfth season still has the potential to correct its course. With several episodes remaining this season, the series can finally give Trudy the focus she so rightfully deserves. Perhaps her experiences could drive her to demand more responsibilities within the precinct post-recovery.
While a return to patrol officer-centered narratives would be ideal, it may not be feasible at this moment. Nonetheless, crafting an episode focused on Trudy or granting her a more substantial role within upcoming Intelligence cases could mark a step in the right direction. Ultimately, the 2025 One Chicago crossover should serve as a valuable reminder for the franchise about Trudy’s exceptional character and the untapped potential it has yet to explore.
