As enthusiasts of the horror genre continue to speculate on the events surrounding Ghostface and their victims in Scream 7, exciting developments are underway for the upcoming legacy sequel of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Freddie Prinze Jr. recently disclosed that the emphasis of the sequel lies on fresh characters. In a conversation on the Scale Talk Podcast hosted by David Miniatures, Prinze Jr. revealed that neither his character Ray Bronson nor his romantic interest Julie James (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt) will be the narrative’s focal point. He commended the skills of writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her works on Do Revenge and Someone Great.
“They’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination. [Kaytin Robinson] made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, ‘Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.’ That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be a new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written.”
The cast for the sequel will introduce a variety of new faces, including Nicolas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nicols, Gabbriette, and Lola Tung, along with Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Madelyn Cline, and Jonah Hauer-King. While the specific roles of these new actors remain unconfirmed, Prinze Jr. hinted that they might be the targets of the imminent threat. Speculation also surrounds whether one of these characters could take on the role of the antagonist. As intrigue builds, questions arise regarding the return of Ben Willis or if a new villain will emerge to take his place.
The original film’s core theme of friendship is anticipated to be revisited, suggesting that a fresh group of friends will become central to the plot of this sequel. While Ray and Julie may not dominate the storyline, their presence is expected to maintain a connection to the original franchise and provide a rich backdrop for character development. Fans are eager to discover the lives of Julie and Ray since their last appearance and how they will confront the re-emergence of the killer.
Since the announcement of this legacy sequel, various updates have surfaced, including casting details and first glimpses of iconic elements, such as the infamous hook. As anticipation grows, fans can mark their calendars for July 18, 2025, when I Know What You Did Last Summer will hit theaters.
