Microsoft Unveils AI Integration in Windows 11 Taskbar and File Explorer

Microsoft has recently introduced an innovative feature called “Ask Copilot” that will enhance the Windows 11 user interface. This feature is seen as a replacement for the traditional Windows Search and promises to integrate seamlessly with AI agents directly on the taskbar. Alongside this development, Microsoft has also confirmed the integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot within File Explorer, further augmenting the productivity capabilities of Windows 11. These upgrades are expected to be available for all users in the upcoming weeks.

Jeremy Chapman, Microsoft 365 Director, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating, “Stay productive without changing how you work with new Microsoft 365 Copilot and AI experiences on any Windows 11 PC.” You can watch his full explanation here.

The taskbar now allows users to access Copilot and AI agents quickly, enabling them to find essential information across files, emails, and meetings effortlessly. This feature allows users to transform their ideas into polished content using either voice or text. With AI tools positioned where users already work, Microsoft aims to streamline workflows, enhance decision-making, and minimize the need to shift between applications or web browsers.

An Overview of New Features in Windows 11

The testing phase for “Ask Copilot” is currently underway. This feature is designed to improve the taskbar search function, allowing users to retrieve files and settings using intelligent prompts. When activated, Ask Copilot replaces the conventional Windows Search and enhances its performance by being faster, resource-efficient, and more user-friendly.

Unlike the standard Windows Search, which may fail to retrieve specific information, Ask Copilot has enhanced capabilities. For instance, if you inquire, “When is my performance review due?” Ask Copilot can access data from Microsoft Teams and your Outlook calendar to provide accurate answers. Similarly, a query like “how do I make my cursor look bigger?” will yield direct access to the relevant settings.

Microsoft created this new interface because integrating AI within the existing Windows Search was challenging. Utilizing a new Windows shell integration, Ask Copilot allows for the management of long-running agents directly from the taskbar. Jeremy Chapman further explained, “…long-running agents can be viewed similar to apps. By starting with the @ symbol, I can invoke my agents and manage them seamlessly.”

Microsoft Researcher on the taskbar

Within Ask Copilot, users can use the “@” symbol to activate various AI agents, such as the Microsoft 365 Researcher. This agent is particularly powerful as it leverages ChatGPT’s Deep Research feature, enabling users to conduct in-depth research tasks directly from the taskbar. Once activated, these agents can run in the background, with visual indicators showing their progress directly on the taskbar.

For example, users will see a green checkmark on the Research icon once a task is completed, and a brief summary will be available. Users can then delve deeper into the findings through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, though the summary from the Researcher Agent is often sufficient for timely decision-making.

Integration of Copilot in File Explorer

Alongside its taskbar innovations, Microsoft is rolling out “Ask Microsoft 365 Copilot” within File Explorer as well. This feature will provide valuable insights into shared files. For instance, selecting a synced document can yield summaries, context, or suggested next steps for managing content.

It’s important to note that these features will gradually be made available to users in the coming weeks, signaling Microsoft’s commitment to integrating AI technology into their operating systems.
