It appears that the trend of perpetuating sexist humor is still alive and well, particularly within certain media circles. A recent incident involving Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany and panelist Lisa Kennedy Montgomery highlights this ongoing issue, sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s declaration of being a “proud feminist.”This statement has evidently ruffled some feathers.
Trudeau made his remarks at an Equal Voice gala in Ottawa, where he reflected on the state of women’s rights, particularly in light of recent political developments in the United States. He characterized the growing attacks on women’s rights as both overt and subtle, asserting, “Women’s rights and women’s progress is under attack, overtly and subtly, but I want you to know that I am and always will be a proud feminist.”
This statement is especially notable considering Donald Trump’s recent criticisms of Canada; Trudeau’s comments appear to be a direct counter to Trump’s rhetoric. Surprisingly, Fox News allowed this topic to be discussed by two women, which in itself is noteworthy.
Reactions from Fox News: A Study in Misogyny
On the show “Outnumbered,” McEnany expressed her disdain for Trudeau’s remarks, dismissing them as “lamer”counterpunches. Montgomery took this a step further, making a bizarre and sexist comment that suggested Trudeau’s respect for women somehow diminished his masculinity. In her words, “What brand of tampons do you use? Such a proud feminist. My goodness. I’m trembling with fear. Please don’t invade us with your soy boyness.”This comment insinuated that a man expressing support for women’s rights was weak, a viewpoint that reflects a troubling mindset.
It’s important to recognize that respect for women’s rights should never be equated with weakness. Many, including myself, value the support of men who champion gender equality over those who perpetuate outdated, toxic stereotypes.
Misinterpretation and Misrepresentation: Trudeau’s True Audience
During the segment, McEnany claimed that Trudeau was mocking all Americans rather than targeting specific individuals or groups. However, it’s evident that his remarks were aimed at those who propagate sexism and racism, particularly among certain media hosts and their audiences. Trudeau’s comments were not a blanket critique of Americans, but rather a direct engagement with specific harmful ideologies.
Montgomery’s attempt to elicit applause for her sexist jibe was met with disappointment, underscoring the strange atmosphere that often permeates Fox News segments—filled with awkward laughter and outdated fashion trends. This raises the question: Are these segments primarily about humor, or have they devolved into a platform for inept comedic attempts rooted in sexism and racism?
The reaction from Fox News to Trudeau’s identification as a feminist is unfortunately aligned with their history of perpetuating negative stereotypes. It seems that the network resorts to crude humor and insults in lieu of meaningful dialogue. Furthermore, the “soy boy”rhetoric is a dated trope that fails to resonate with today’s evolving conversations around masculinity and respect for gender equality.
