Former UFC vet disagrees with Matt Brown’s take on the promotion needing a change of gloves

During a recent discussion, UFC veteran Matt Brown proposed a modification to the mandatory UFC gloves, which have been in use since 1997. His suggestion was countered by former middleweight fighter Sam Alvey.

Brown’s remarks were prompted by Chris Weidman’s victory against Bruno Silva, which was marred by multiple eye pokes. At first, the match was declared a TKO win for Weidman, but it was ultimately changed to a decision in the American’s favor.

In an interview on The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast, Brown attributed the eye pokes to the design of the UFC gloves, arguing that the gloves caused the fingers to be pushed forward rather than naturally curved inward.

“Every [fighter] I guarantee was sitting there watching that saying the same s**t, when are we going to fix these goddamn gloves? How many eye pokes are we going to have to see before we f*****g fix these gloves? This isn’t even a complicated problem. Make it easy to make a fist. If you should have to force anything, it should be to force your hand open.”

Alvey responded to the Instagram post and advocated for changes to the eye poke regulations. He proposed a strict consequence of deducting 50% of the fighter’s purse in instances of an eye poke. He expressed this idea through the following statement:

“I don’t think There is anything wrong with the gloves. First “incidental” eye poke take a point. If they can’t continue because of the poke they win. You will end eye pokes as soon as you threaten to take 1/2 the purse”

Matt Brown slams Jake Paul’s decision to fight a retired Mike Tyson

On July 20, 2024, Jake Paul, who rose to fame as a social media influencer, will face off against Mike Tyson, the most high-profile opponent he has ever encountered. However, Tyson, who is now 57 years old, is no longer at the peak of his career.

Matt Brown criticized Paul’s choice to challenge Tyson, pointing out that it went against Paul’s previous decision to only face more skilled boxers. He stated:

“It’s a lose-lose for him. Obviously, he’s going to get a bag. We’re all going to watch it. I’m sure Netflix is paying him good. But it’s a lose-lose in actual fighting. You can’t lose to a 60-year-old man and you also can’t beat a 60-year-old man. It’s a lose-lose. It’s garbage to me.”

The upcoming matchup between Paul and Tyson will be broadcasted live on Netflix, and it will also serve as Tyson’s first exhibition fight since 2020.
