The development cycle lasted approximately four years; however, by late 2023, it was confirmed that Naughty Dog decided to abandon the project. The primary reason cited was that dedicating resources to a live-service game would divert attention and manpower away from their core strength in creating single-player narratives.

While Naughty Dog kept many aspects of The Last of Us Online under wraps, Shuhei Yoshida shed light on its status in a recent episode of the Sacred Symbols+ podcast. He noted that his experience with the game was highly positive, which aligns with the studio’s well-established reputation for delivering quality gaming experiences.

However, a mid-2023 evaluation of PlayStation’s live-service strategy, led by Bungie, alerted Naughty Dog to the potential risks associated with the necessary post-launch support for such a title. This realization ultimately reflected a “lack of foresight”in balancing resources for their upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

To clarify any misconceptions, Yoshida confirmed that Sony does not mandate first-party studios to pursue live-service games.
