Former Rockstar Employees Seek Reinstatement to Resume Work on GTA VI

Controversy Surrounds Rockstar Games Following Sudden Layoffs

The YouTube channel People Make Games recently featured a video that highlights the experiences of several workers who were abruptly terminated by Rockstar Games. Following these layoffs, which occurred earlier this month, the affected employees have been actively protesting outside Rockstar North’s Edinburgh office. In response to these events, the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) has condemned the dismissals, labeling them as blatant attempts at union-busting. This criticism stems from the fact that the employees had just successfully organized to secure a 10% unionization agreement in the Edinburgh office.

According to Rockstar, the company justified the layoffs by alleging that the employees were leaking internal information on public forums. However, the employees dispute this claim, asserting there is no proof to support it, and express concerns about being dismissed without any due process or representation.

Employee Accounts and Aspirations

In the video interview, the workers shared their frustrations and fears regarding their abrupt termination, particularly due to the implications for their professional reputations. They are concerned that the studio’s designation of their exits as a result of “gross misconduct”could severely hinder their future career opportunities. One worker, Bran, expressed:

If I have gross misconduct on my CV, on my resume for the rest of my life, that is a huge detriment to any future career prospects. Something important to notice as well is you feel shame to be kicked out of work this way. Like, all of us still want to be here. We want our jobs, we want to finish what we were working on. And now the internal shame feel of having this gross misconduct with you forever, it’s hard to explain.

Calls for Reinstatement and Accountability

Fred, an organizer with the IWGB, clarified the union’s immediate objectives:

  • Reinstatement of all 31 UK workers who were fired, along with three workers in Toronto.
  • Full compensation for lost wages during this period.
  • Accountability from Rockstar for what they describe as unjust dismissals, conducted without proper procedure or evidence.
  • A commitment from Rockstar to adhere to UK employment laws moving forward.

Fred remarked, “We’ve just submitted our legal claim. The ball is in their court to respond. We hope they’ll resolve this with us amicably, right? This is, in the end, egregious, and to be honest, shocking.” He noted that this situation is unprecedented in the last two decades of UK trade union organizing, emphasizing that these workers simply wish to return to their jobs and contribute to the beloved project, Grand Theft Auto VI.

Contextual Factors: Timing of Layoffs and Future Implications

The timing of the layoffs raises eyebrows, especially considering that the studio is nearing the completion of a major project like Grand Theft Auto VI. The game has been postponed multiple times, now targeted for release on November 19, 2026. Additionally, as the UK approaches the implementation of the Employment Rights Bill, set to strengthen worker protections starting next year, some speculate that this might be an opportune time for dismissals.

In light of these developments, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly described the work culture at both Take-Two and Rockstar as “extraordinary, ”although he refrained from discussing the specifics of the layoffs further. The situation remains in flux, and many are watching to see how Rockstar will respond to the growing demands for accountability and justice from the affected workers and their union.
