As of October 8, 2024, significant updates have surfaced regarding former NCT member Taeil, revealing that he conducted a live social media stream merely one day after being booked in connection with a rape allegation dating back to June 2024. This revelation was reported by News Nate, a prominent media outlet in South Korea.
Taeil faced charges on June 13, 2024, for allegedly assaulting foreign women, and surprisingly, he went live the following day, which was also his birthday. During this stream, he casually engaged in discussions and even noted that he had considered streaming the previous day—the same day he was officially charged. His nonchalant demeanor during this session has incited outrage among K-pop fans and the broader public.
His casual reaction to serious allegations has drawn significant criticism, with many expressing discomfort at how he seemed unaffected by the weight of the situation. This reaction led to substantial backlash, culminating in SM Entertainment’s decision to remove him from the group on August 28, 2024.
Revelations About Taeil’s Previous Livestream
On October 8, 2024, it was disclosed that Taeil is currently under investigation by the police for charges of “aggravated quasi-rape.”News Nate reported that he was referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on June 12, 2024, without being detained. The charges allege that he and two associates sexually assaulted a woman who was intoxicated.
The term “aggravated quasi-rape”is used in legal contexts when two or more perpetrators, or those wielding a weapon, commit acts of sexual violence against a victim who is incapacitated and unable to resist. Should he be found guilty, South Korean law stipulates a minimum sentence of seven years and can even lead to life imprisonment.
Taeil was officially charged on June 13 after a report was made by the victim. Remarkably, he went live on social media just one day later (June 14), a stream that has since resurfaced and shocked many observers online.
In this broadcast, he appeared relaxed and makeup-free, casually chatting with his fans. He made ambiguous statements, hinting that he had thought about streaming at midnight the previous day (the day of his booking) but opted against it due to feeling tired. He also discussed his new hairstyle and even hummed along to a song during the session.
On August 29, SM Entertainment confirmed they had become aware of Taeil’s involvement in this serious criminal case related to sexual misconduct. They highlighted the grave nature of the situation and announced that, following discussions with Taeil, it was decided he would cease all participation in group activities, thus effectively expelling him from NCT.
Since the emergence of this scandal, SM Entertainment and fellow NCT 127 members have unfollowed him across all social media networks. Furthermore, his personal Instagram has been set to private, and all content from his YouTube channel has been removed.
Fans have also distanced themselves from the performer as a result. Taeil’s follower count, which once stood at approximately 6 million, has plummeted to 4.77 million since the incident.
