Significant Departure from Apple’s Design Team
Recent reports indicate a notable shift within Apple’s design team with the departure of Abidur Chowdhury, the mind behind the company’s sleek iPhone Air, unveiled at this year’s event. Chowdhury’s exit comes as a surprise, especially considering his pivotal role in rolling out Apple’s slimmest smartphone yet.
Transition to AI Startup
According to Bloomberg, Chowdhury has decided to join an AI startup, a move that has stirred discussions within Apple, particularly due to his growing prominence in the design division. During the launch event in September, he dedicated around two minutes to showcasing the iPhone Air’s innovative features.
Sales Performance and Future of iPhone Air
Although Chowdhury’s resignation has raised eyebrows, sources indicate that it is not linked to the iPhone Air’s poor sales performance. Reports have surfaced highlighting Apple’s dissatisfaction with these figures, leading to considerations to either withdraw the product or postpone its next iteration—a path that Samsung is contemplating with its Galaxy Edge series.
Nevertheless, emerging information suggests that the anticipated iPhone Air 2 will proceed as planned without delays. Apple is reportedly exploring enhancements to the device, including the integration of a cutting-edge 2nm chipset to optimize battery performance and the addition of a second camera.
Speculations Surrounding the Departure
The exact reasons for Chowdhury’s exit remain ambiguous, though speculation is rife. Following the departure of Apple’s former chief design officer, Jony Ive, in 2019 to establish his design firm, many from his team have left for different opportunities, including several who joined I’ve’s new venture.
Shifting Dynamics in Apple’s Design Team
Chowdhury joined Apple concurrently with Ive’s exit, marking his six-year tenure with the company. This latest high-profile departure signals a radical transformation within the Apple design team, as most of the original members have either retired or transitioned to other firms. Adding to this shake-up, Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer who supervised the design team, also stepped down last week, leading to the design team now reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.
