“For 21 straight years”: LeBron James cites March Madness as the only time he feels like playing college basketball
As a highly talented player, LeBron James was one of the few to join the NBA straight out of high school. Despite having no regrets about this choice, the 20-time All-Star has admitted to occasionally having second thoughts.
Currently, March Madness remains a highly discussed topic in the realm of basketball. The remaining teams are diligently preparing for their Final Four matchups, and the national championship game is set to take place on Monday, April 8th.
During their “Mind the Game”podcast, LeBron James and JJ Redick discussed the NCAA tournament in a recent episode. It was during this conversation that the four-time champion revealed that he only considers not playing in college during this time of year.
“This is the only time. March Madness right now is the only time I think about playing college basketball,”LeBron said. “For 21 straight years.”
Although LeBron previously disclosed that he does not watch a lot of college basketball throughout the year, his viewing habits have shifted slightly since his son Bronny James enrolled as a freshman at USC.
LeBron James Confesses to Assisting Close Friend During NCAA Tournament
In addition to being a spectator at his son’s games, LeBron James has a strong connection to college basketball. This has been evident during March Madness, as one of the star players for the LA Lakers has a close friendship with a coach who led their team to an unexpected victory.
Currently, the head coach for Duquesne’s men’s basketball team is Dru Joyce, who has a long-standing connection with LeBron as they were former high school teammates. Despite being seeded 11th, Duquesne managed to defeat the 6th ranked BYU in the opening round. Sadly, their journey was cut short in the second round when they were defeated by the 3rd seeded Illinois.
After Duquesne pulled off the upset, LeBron James wasted no time in taking to social media to praise his friend. However, he also immediately got to work for him. During a conversation with JJ Redick, LeBron revealed that he would watch other games and send his friend notes on their upcoming opponent.
“Right after the game, I was watching Illinois vs Morehead State scouting because that’s who they play next,”LeBron said. “Already sent notes, I got to watch like three quarters of game.”
LeBron has frequently discussed the possibility of playing in college, making it clear that this is not the first time he has mentioned it. In a broadcast alongside WNBA stars Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, he was asked where he would have attended. While it is commonly believed that he would have chosen Ohio State, he also mentioned Duke and North Carolina as potential destinations.
It’s not surprising that LeBron chose to play for either Duke or UNC, as both schools have a rich history and are highly regarded programs. Had he selected North Carolina, he would have been following in the footsteps of the legendary Michael Jordan.
