Challenges Faced by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Launch Day
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has encountered significant challenges on its launch day, particularly with its online server capabilities. An overwhelming influx of players across Xbox, PC, and Game Pass platforms has led to extensive downtime, hindering users from logging in or maintaining stable connections. Fortunately, the development team has taken strides to stabilize server functionality.
Understanding the Server Issues
The game’s studio released a comprehensive statement detailing the root cause of the server problems that arose on launch day:
“We have worked diligently with our partners, including Asobo and others, to provide an exceptional simulation experience. However, the excitement surrounding the launch was tremendous, and we encountered a failure in one of our services handling new systems within the game, such as career mode and various missions. The server tasked with managing data requests became overwhelmed, resulting in delays and errors.”
Insights from Asobo’s Leadership
In a recent developer update video, Asobo’s CEO and Co-founder, Sebastian Wloch, provided further clarification on the issue.
“The underlying problem occurs because when the service fails, it continues to attempt retries, which creates excessively long loading times that are not intended,” Wloch outlined. “If critical data is missing, loading fails at 97%, prompting a message to restart. In cases where non-critical content is absent, players may still access the simulator but may find missing aircraft or other elements. All of this stems from the same server issue impacting the cache.”
Current Status and Future Outlook
According to the developers, with the initial surge of players subsiding and server issues being rectified, users can expect smoother logins moving forward. The studio expressed their appreciation for players’ patience, saying, “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”
Impact on User Experience and Reviews
The launch day troubles have had a significant impact on Steam user reviews, which currently reflect a staggering 17% Overwhelmingly Negative rating from nearly 3,000 submissions. The all-time peak of concurrent players reached 24,863 on launch day, although this number quickly declined. However, there is hope that player counts may increase as the weekend approaches, contingent upon stable server performance.
