Flight Risk Movie Review: Forgettable Mel Gibson Action-Thriller with Emotional Flatness and Poor Execution

Contrary to what promotional materials may suggest, Wahlberg has a surprisingly minimal role. Dockery, as U. S.Marshal Madelyn Harris, bears the brunt of the narrative’s weight as she attempts to navigate the chaos.

Breaking away from her iconic role in Downton Abbey, Dockery portrays Harris, tasked with safeguarding the witness Winston (played by Grace) on a perilous trip. The film opens with Winston’s resigned comment about their remote Alaskan location, setting the tone for a lackluster experience. Armed with this knowledge, Harris and Winston board an antiquated aircraft piloted by Wahlberg’s character, Daryl. What ensues is an emotionally dull and narratively shaky adventure that leaves much to be desired.

Much of the on-screen action is reduced to watching Harris communicate through a headset, receiving instructions to pilot the plane. While this may accurately represent an emergency scenario, it translates poorly into captivating cinema. The core premise of Flight Risk features a potentially compelling ensemble left underutilized; instead of tension, we descend into monotony.

The supposed shocking unveiling of Harris’s complicated past comes off as a mere narrative device, not an avenue for genuine character exploration. Grace’s one-dimensional portrayal leaves little room for depth, with his emotional spectrum limited to concerns about his mother.
