In a remarkable shift of perspective during The Final Experiment (TFE), a prominent flat Earth advocate publicly acknowledged his misconceptions about the phenomenon of the 24-hour Sun after traveling to Antarctica. TFE is designed to challenge the beliefs of flat Earthers by taking both believers and skeptics on an expedition to the southernmost continent, with the ultimate goal of demonstrating the Earth’s true spherical nature.
The primary aim of this initiative is to illustrate that the Sun does not consistently hover over Antarctica for 24 hours, an occurrence that would be impossible if the Earth were, indeed, flat. Earlier this month, participants, including flat Earth proponent Jeran Campanella—who operates the YouTube channel jeranism—travelled to Antarctica. During a live broadcast from the icy continent, Campanella conceded his error in believing that the Earth is flat.
Campanella’s Revelations: Acknowledging the 24-Hour Sun
A fundamental assertion of the flat Earth theory is that the Sun cannot move in opposing directions at the North and South Poles. In contrast, spherical Earth theory posits that the Sun remains visible in the sky, even at midnight in polar regions. While flat Earthers often reference the azimuthal equidistant (AE) map as an explanation for 24-hour daylight at the North Pole, it fails to account for the Sun’s opposing movements in Antarctica.
The variation in the Sun’s visibility is explicable solely through the understanding of a spherical Earth. Thus, observers located at both poles experience the Sun from opposite vantage points on a shared plane. This core conflict is the foundation of the TFE initiative. This year, project leader Will Duffy guided a group of YouTubers to the South Pole to witness this phenomenon firsthand.
Traditionally, flat Earthers challenge the evidence of a 24-hour Sun, often dismissing video content that supports its existence. However, by experiencing the daylight firsthand in Antarctica, many participants were left with little choice but to reconsider their beliefs.
After observing the 24-hour Sun in Antarctica, Campanella candidly admitted during a livestream, “Sometimes, you are wrong in life.”He further elaborated, “I was adamant that there was no 24-hour Sun. Now, I understand that it is indeed a fact—the Sun circles you in the South.”He encouraged viewers to acknowledge the evidence, stating, “You should at least accept what these individuals have said about the Sun circling the Southern continent.”
As a well-known advocate for the flat Earth belief, Campanella was aware that his admission could spark backlash from his followers. He acknowledged this by saying, “I know some will label me a shill for being honest. But if honesty equates to being a shill, then so be it. Initially, I firmly believed in the absence of a 24-hour Sun, but now I understand otherwise.”During his voyage, he also noted, “It seems that the Moon follows a similar path here.”
Despite recognizing the reality of the 24-hour Sun, Campanella emphasized, “This acknowledgment does not signify the end of the AE map or the flat Earth theory. Perhaps there are still answers out there; I simply do not possess them at this moment.”
