Cursor Size Bug in Windows 11 24H2 and Its Resolution
Users of Windows 11 24H2 experienced an undocumented issue that altered the cursor’s default size upon resuming from sleep mode. This glitch became apparent after the update’s release in October 2024 and appeared intermittently until a fix was introduced with the optional update in July 2025.
Default Cursor Settings and Malfunction
Typically, Windows 11 sets the cursor to the “smallest”size by default, which is reflected in the Mouse Pointer settings. Users can adjust the mouse pointer size with a slider: moving it to the right enlarges the cursor, while dragging it to the left shrinks it. The initial setting is ‘1, ’ representing the smallest option.
The Impact of the Bug
This mouse pointer configuration is designed to maintain consistent cursor sizes across all applications in Windows. The bug, however, disrupted this functionality, causing the cursor to display incorrectly. It affected all types of pointers, whether white, black, inverted, or colored.
Evidence of the Issue
In tests conducted by Windows Latest, it was observed that the cursor size might unpredictably increase despite being set to ‘1.’ This behavior was captured in the accompanying video, which shows the cursor erroneously appearing larger than its assigned size. Attempts to manually adjust the slider further confirmed the glitch, as reverting back to the smallest size did not display the intended result.
Community Feedback and Resolution
Reports from other users indicated that this cursor size issue was widespread. After testing the latest optional update (KB5062660), we can confirm that Microsoft has successfully resolved this cursor bug in Windows 11 24H2.
Microsoft’s Stance and Future Updates
Interestingly, Microsoft has not publicly acknowledged the cursor issue, instead promoting 24H2 as their most reliable operating system version. Nonetheless, the resolution of the cursor problem is a welcomed change, alleviating not just visual disturbances but also enhancing usability, particularly in regard to text selection and hand icon functionality.
Performance Enhancements with July 2025 Update
Additionally, the optional update brings significant performance enhancements and addresses various stability concerns within the system. These fixes will gradually become available to users with the Windows 11 24H2 August 2025 Update, set to roll out on August 12, 2025.
