As Windows 10 approaches its tenth anniversary, Microsoft is taking a moment to reflect on the operating system’s journey. In light of this milestone, various features have been highlighted, including the top ten stories from the last decade, an examination of ten underperforming features, and the operating system’s role in shaping users’ awareness of privacy issues.
In this celebration, we also want to address some persistent problems and shortcomings that have endured over the years. Despite nearly a decade since its launch, several issues remain unresolved. Below is a compilation of those lingering concerns, presented in no particular order.
Transitioning Between Settings and Control Panel
Microsoft initiated plans in 2015 to phase out the traditional Control Panel in favor of a streamlined Settings app to enhance user experience. This shift aimed to simplify the system architecture. However, nearly ten years later, this transition is still incomplete, even with the rollout of Windows 11. Although progress has been made in migrating features to the Settings app, Microsoft has yet to make a definitive move to retire the Control Panel, leaving users in a confusing dual-interface environment.
Persistent Error Code 0x80070643
The error code 0x80070643 has vexed Windows 10 users for over a year, with Microsoft struggling to implement automated solutions. As a workaround, users are left with the suggestion to disregard the error, which, while not affecting critical operations, remains a frustrating oversight that detracts from the overall user experience.
Challenges with Tablet Mode
Tablet Mode in Windows 10 was designed to facilitate a touch-friendly interface, making tablets easier to navigate. However, despite various attempts to enhance its usability, the mode has not truly resonated with users. Many find it clunky and less productive compared to traditional desktop settings, leading to the conclusion that maintaining a keyboard connection is often the better choice.
Windows Search: Inconsistent Performance
Although Windows Search has its supporters, it still suffers from significant limitations, particularly its heavy reliance on Bing Search. This dependence can lead to user frustration when search terms yield incorrect or irrelevant results, risk creating discontent among long-time users who may feel increasingly alienated by the emphasis on Bing.
Inconsistencies in User Experience
In 2017, Microsoft introduced its Fluent Design system, promising a modern aesthetic for Windows 10. Unfortunately, the execution has been inconsistent, resulting in a mix of legacy and contemporary design elements throughout the OS. This inconsistency impacts usability, particularly with the dark mode feature, which is not uniformly applied across Microsoft’s own applications, leading to user frustration.
