SpaceX is facing ongoing challenges with its upper-stage Starship spacecraft, following a significant explosion during testing last week. This incident, which occurred at the test stand prior to the anticipated Flight 10 later this month, has left behind considerable damage to both the Starship and its testing infrastructure. Images of the wreckage were recently released on social media by an observer on a nearby boat.

Overview of the Starship Incident

The explosion of SpaceX’s Starship last week came as unexpected news, especially given that the rocket had not encountered any major issues since last year. The explosion, which illuminated the night sky due to the spacecraft being fully fueled, was traced back to a malfunctioning secondary tank located in the upper section of the rocket. This component is critical for regulating pressure within the spacecraft, which is essential for withstanding atmospheric forces during launch.

Implications for Upcoming Flight Tests

An FAA advisory had previously indicated that SpaceX aimed to conduct Starship Flight 10 by the end of this month. This would have marked a swift resumption of testing, following a two-month pause between Starship Flights 8 and 9. Notably, Flight 9 displayed significant improvements over its predecessor, particularly with respect to the upper-stage spacecraft, which had faced operational issues in earlier tests.

During earlier flights, the Starship’s engines had failed to shut down appropriately. However, in Flight 9, the spacecraft successfully managed engine shutdowns during cruise flight, although reentry control remained a challenge, resulting in the mission being classified as a partial failure.

Visual Evidence of the Damage

Images shared online showcase the damaged upper-stage spacecraft and test stand. Notably, the Starship has been deformed, with much of its exterior burnished away by flames during the incident. However, some heat shield tiles remained intact, indicating the structural elements of the spacecraft are still functional. Additionally, a potential Starlink kit can be observed in the images beneath the remaining protective tiles.

Recovery Challenges for SpaceX

While SpaceX is known for its resourcefulness and could manage to recover quickly from the loss of the upper-stage ship—due to its hardware-rich approach—the damage inflicted on the test facilities could represent a more formidable hurdle to overcome. Prior to the recent developments, the testing of upper-stage ships was conducted in proximity to the launch pad; however, those stands were retired after the construction of dedicated ground testing facilities, which have now suffered substantial damage.

SpaceX has not released further details about the status of Starship Flight 10. Local media footage indicates that the company is actively engaged in rebuilding its ground testing facilities following the explosion.
