The Return of a Classic: Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
Although not part of the mainline series, Final Fantasy Tactics remains a beloved installment within the renowned Square Enix universe. First released on the PlayStation in 1997, this tactical role-playing game (TRPG) revolutionized character development with its comprehensive Job system, granting players an extraordinary level of customization. The engaging narrative boasts a rich cast of characters and intricate plot lines that many would argue rival even the finest literature. Given its monumental influence, the upcoming remaster, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, is anticipated as a timely return that promises to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience, potentially outperforming the previous War of the Lions edition.
Nostalgic Gameplay Experience
During last month’s Gamescom, I had the opportunity to spend an hour with the game prior to its official release. The familiar intro played immediately transported me back to 1998, my first encounter with this classic. However, the remaster enhances this nostalgia, featuring full voice acting that aligns beautifully with the improved script based on the updated translation by Alexander O. Smith from the PSP version. As I dove into the game, I opted for the Enhanced Mode, which showcased impressive upgrades such as enhanced visuals, a revamped interface, and an overall modernized gameplay experience.
Enhanced Features and User Experience
Beginning with the iconic battle at Orbonne Monastery, the remaster quickly illustrated its potential as the definitive version of this classic title. The new interface enhances both aesthetics and functionality, while the speed-up features contribute to a more dynamic combat experience. Voice acting adds depth to all characters, even the background units, amplifying the immersive feel as they react during battles—grunting during attacks and vocally invoking spells. Although the early battles are relatively simple, making it tough to gauge any significant adjustments to game balance, the overall feel is undoubtedly an enriched version of the original.

Familiar Challenges with Innovative Tweaks
Before concluding my session, I engaged in one of the game’s hallmark battles at Zeirchele Falls from early Chapter 2. Facing the battle at normal difficulty, I quickly recognized that, like Orbonne, it was manageable, thanks to my history with the original. By deploying a well-rounded team consisting of an Archer and a Time Mage, I efficiently navigated the encounter while safeguarding Princess Ovelia. Although the balance seemed consistent with the original, I did appreciate the refinement in Job Points (JP) rewards, aligning them with the JP Up skill from the Squire class. This change accelerates the progression process, allowing players to optimize their characters more swiftly.
Anticipation for Release
As a long-time fan of the franchise, my enthusiasm for Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles has only intensified since its announcement earlier this year. My hands-on experience at Gamescom solidified my excitement, igniting anticipation for its release on September 30. With the game set to launch on various platforms—including PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch—it promises to be the ultimate way to embark upon Ramza Beoulve’s captivating journey amidst the chaos of the War of the Lions.
For those craving a nostalgic yet fresh experience, this remaster stands to blend cherished memories with modern updates in an unforgettable gaming format.
