Feeling Guilty for Loving the Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Reunion with The Next Generation Cast

The third season of Star Trek: Picard marks an incredible reunion for fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), yet I couldn’t shake a sense of guilt for enjoying it so profoundly. This final season opens with Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, portrayed by Patrick Stewart, responding to an urgent distress call from Dr. Beverly Crusher, played by Gates McFadden. In his quest for rescue, Picard enlists the help of his former first officer, Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), aboard the USS Titan-A. Their journey ultimately leads them and the rest of the TNG crew on an unforgettable adventure aboard the refurbished USS Enterprise-D.

As a long-time aficionado of TNG, witnessing this reunion was heartwarming, particularly the nostalgia of seeing beloved characters come together once more. Showrunner Terry Matalas and his team expertly infused the series with their passion for TNG, embracing the sentiments associated with the iconic cast. Despite the series’ brilliant conclusion, many fans felt that Star Trek: Nemesis left a lot to be desired in terms of closure. Season 3 of Picard addresses some of the disappointments from the TNG films, yet it also sidesteps the characters introduced earlier in the spinoff.

Star Trek: Picard Reunion

While the initial two seasons of Star Trek: Picard received a mixed reception, they succeeded in introducing compelling new characters into the Star Trek universe. In contrast, only Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker returns in the final season. The focus of Season 3 on reuniting the TNG cast inevitably came at the cost of deeper narratives for those introduced earlier, which prompts curiosity about the fate of characters like the android Soji Asha (Isa Briones), Romulan cadet Elnor (Evan Evagora), and Agnes Jurati’s (Alison Pill) benevolent Borg Queen.

This season catapults Admiral Picard and his old crew into a gripping narrative involving Changelings and the Borg—extending storylines that originated decades earlier. Additionally, the introduction of noteworthy new characters, such as Captain Liam Shaw (portrayed by Todd Stashwick), and a more substantial role for Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, made Season 3 a standout. Yet, these changes resulted in a tone that differed significantly from the previous two seasons, leading to a bittersweet farewell for the show’s original characters.
