FX’s Grotesquerie showcases chilling murder sequences, peculiar religious undertones, and enigmatic figures, one of whom is Father Charlie Mayhew, brought to life by Nicholas Alexander Chavez.
The Emmy-winning performer is widely recognized for his portrayal in the long-standing soap opera General Hospital. In Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie, he embodies a “young, progressive priest”who exploits his sexual appeal and revels in activities that straddle the line between morality and sin.
Alongside Chavez, the FX horror thriller features Niecy Nash-Betts as Detective Lois Tryon and Micaela Diamond as Sister Megan Duval, a nun and reporter who forms an intriguingly close bond with Father Charlie.
Delving into Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s Role in Grotesquerie
Chavez portrays Father Charlie Mayhew in this horror anthology. According to FX Networks, his character is depicted as someone whose “perspective shifts thanks to Sister Megan’s investigative reporting.”

Father Charlie made his debut in the second episode of Grotesquerie season 1, titled “True Crime Catholics.”During this episode, he was seen delivering a sermon before heading to a burger diner with Sister Megan, where they engaged in discussions about local homicides and their mutual fascination with true crime stories.
This episode also revealed Chavez’s character’s unique interests, including a penchant for leather chaps and self-discipline practices. Despite his innovative aspirations for the church, his approaches raise eyebrows. He has been dubbed “the Pedaling Priest.”In episode 4 of Grotesquerie, he showcased his toned physique to congregants while spin cycling and announced:
“You are saving your souls from sinning while spinning.”
Chavez described his character as “deeply conflicted.”In a conversation with The Wrap, he elaborated:
“His self-image and his perception of the surrounding world often diverge from his professed beliefs. He is prepared to make considerable sacrifices to achieve his desires.”
Nicholas Alexander Chavez’s Career Beyond Grotesquerie
Following his performance in the film, Chavez landed the part of the troubled Spencer Cassadine in the ABC daytime drama General Hospital. He portrayed this character for an impressive 358 episodes from 2021 to 2024, earning an Emmy for Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama Series in 2022.
Additionally, Nicholas Alexander Chavez took on the role of Lyle Menendez, one of the infamous Menendez brothers, in Netflix’s eagerly awaited limited series Monsters, based on the real-life events involving the brothers, who infamously took their parents’ lives in their Beverly Hills residence in 1989.
