From April Fool’s Joke to Series
The inception of Fate/strange fake traces back to an April Fool’s prank created by Ryogo Narita, the mastermind behind popular series like Durarara and Baccano!, in 2008. Initially titled Fate/states night as a playful jab at “stay night”and “United States,” the prank proposed a fictional Fate game set in the US.
Although the joke was removed shortly after April Fool’s Day, it caught the attention of TYPE-MOON, which later transformed it into a series of novels. By 2015, Narita had produced the nine-volume Fate/strange fake light novel series, characterized by unique illustrations from Morii Shizuki.
Plot Summary: Diversified Fate/Stay Night Timeline
Though its origins are humorous, Fate/strange fake explores serious themes. Set against the backdrop of the Third Holy Grail War in 1939, an American organization attempts to replicate the events of that war in their own district, Snowfield, in 2009. This experimentation leads to unexpected and bizarre summons.
To address the unfolding chaos, agents Langal and Faldeus from the Mage’s Association are dispatched to Snowfield. However, Faldeus’s true allegiance, revealing him as a double agent for the American organization, adds a layer of intrigue and potential betrayal. This scenario presents a “what if”continuation to the original Fate/stay night saga, offering fresh narrative avenues for both newcomers and veterans of the franchise.
Creative Team Behind Fate/strange fake
The anime adaptation of Fate/strange fake reunites a talented team previously involved in the Whispers of Dawn prologue film. The animation is being produced by A-1 Pictures—an interesting departure from the usual production studios associated with the Fate franchise.
Directors Shun Enokido and Takahito Sakazume will steer the creative direction of the anime. Enokido is recognized for directing notable projects, including a music video for “Flower Rhapsody”and handling animation direction for several episodes of Fate/Apocrypha. Meanwhile, Sakazume makes his directorial debut in this series, having previously contributed to well-known titles such as Black Clover and Fate/Grand Order.
Daisuke Ohigashi, who boasts experience similar to that of Narita, serves as the chief writer, known notably for his work on Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 and Noblesse. The series will feature music composed by the acclaimed Hiroyuki Sawano, known for his impactful scores in various popular anime, his recent credits including Solo Leveling.
Prologue Film: Whispers of Dawn
The Whispers of Dawn prologue movie premiered in Japan both on television and across streaming platforms, initially intended for the 2023 New Year’s event but rescheduled to July. This prologue film received positive feedback from fans of the Fate series and even attracted new viewers.
While not essential for understanding the upcoming anime, the prologue serves as a valuable introduction to the world of Fate for newcomers and can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Episode 1 of Fate/strange fake is set to air on December 31, 2024, and will also be available for international audiences through Crunchyroll.
