Serious Setback for Fantastic Pixel Castle Studio

In a significant development for the gaming community, Greg Street, Head and Game Director of Fantastic Pixel Castle Studio, recently announced on LinkedIn that their first game, a fantasy MMORPG codenamed Ghost, is facing dire circumstances. The primary backer, NetEase, has chosen to withdraw its financial support, placing the game’s future in jeopardy.

Pursuit of a New Publisher in Challenging Times

In light of the funding withdrawal, both NetEase and Fantastic Pixel Castle are actively searching for new publishing partners. However, the current state of the gaming industry makes this task particularly daunting. Street has indicated that team members are now being urged to “explore future opportunities, ”a clear indication that the studio may soon face layoffs if a new publisher is not secured rapidly.

If we’re unable to find a publisher soon, the reality is that the studio would likely close, and the entire team, leadership included, would be affected. We want to thank the Ghost community, our playtesters, and the literally hundreds of people who have given us advice on how to find funding in this absurdly challenging time for our industry. I hope you all will have a chance to play Ghost. I also want to thank the FPC team who has made a game that we all should be proud of. I know it’s cliche to say this, but demonstrably this is the best team I have ever worked with.

Innovative Features of Ghost and Past Experiences

Street, well-known for his tenure as the Lead Systems Designer on World of Warcraft from 2008 to 2013, previously discussed the unique aspects of Ghost during an interview two years ago. One of the game’s standout features was its dual-shard system, allowing players to navigate between public “Red”Shards—typical of many MMORPGs—and private “Blue”Shards, which were initially intended to incorporate survival elements but later evolved to include roguelike mechanics.

Broader Implications for the Gaming Industry

The challenges facing Fantastic Pixel Castle are not isolated cases within the gaming sector. Recently, NetEase also halted support for T-Minus Zero, a studio established by veterans from BioWare and Bethesda, alongside the cancellation of several other projects earlier this year. These incidents underline the increasing volatility and competitive pressures in the gaming market.
