On October 10, 2024, fans of SEVENTEEN expressed their dissatisfaction with CJ ENM’s revised specifications for the ‘2024 MAMA Awards’ in the ‘Album of the Year’ category. In the past, 80% of the award was determined by album sales, a format that favored SEVENTEEN’s album *Seventeenth Heaven*, which achieved sales exceeding 5.7 million copies.
This year’s awards will now weigh additional elements like production quality, visual aesthetics, and impact within the industry, diversifying the criteria significantly.
This alteration creates uncertainty regarding the results, leaving fans concerned, especially those who thought SEVENTEEN was guaranteed to win based on previous standards. Scheduled from November 21 to 23 in Los Angeles and Osaka, the last-minute modifications have been perceived as unfair by many supporters, who have accused the organization of undermining the group’s chances.
Social media saw an influx of fan reactions expressing their disappointment and criticizing the changes. One user on X, @SvntnYoon1004 commented,
“They just don’t want a sure win for SVT; they keep adjusting the criteria whenever Seventeen is in the lead. MAMA, your motives are obvious. This is sabotage in broad daylight.”
“This is just a way to rig it without being blatant about it…,”a fan remarked.
“How many idols/groups have been unfairly deprived of their awards due to MAMA’s last-minute changes over the years? How many fandoms have suffered and cursed MAMA? Show of hands, please,”another user chimed in.
“Just admit you don’t want SVT to win!:)),”someone remarked.
“Changing the criteria when the tracking period has concluded is ridiculous. They couldn’t even wait to apply this for next year’s event. Oh MAMA, you’re always deceitful,”wrote another user.
Despite the disappointment surrounding the new criteria, some fans remained hopeful, asserting that SEVENTEEN is still deserving of the ‘Album of the Year’ recognition. They argue that the group excels in all areas, making them viable candidates for the award even under the revised guidelines.
“SVT still deserves the Album of the Year award. Not only due to sales; their album stands out in terms of quality as well… In terms of music, production, and thematic depth, everything qualifies SEVENTEEN’s album for this award,”a user stated on X.
“Let’s discuss the visual and artistic elements of *Seventeenth Heaven*, which boasts one of the most coherent concepts and art presentations among K-pop albums. The physical album, music video, performance, and track selection are top-notch,”another fan added.
Changes to Album of the Year Criteria and New Best Choreography Category at the 2024 MAMA Awards
Responses from K-pop fans have been mixed following the announcement of the altered criteria for the upcoming 2024 MAMA Awards’ ‘Album of the Year’ award.
With expectations high for SEVENTEEN to win with *Seventeenth Heaven*, which surpassed 5.7 million copies in sales in 2023, competition remains fierce with other leading artists like Stray Kids, ENHYPEN, BTS’ Jungkook, TXT, and NCT DREAM also in the mix.
Alongside the changes to the ‘Album of the Year’ category, a new ‘Best Choreography’ award will be introduced, recognizing the vital contributions choreographers and performers have made to K-pop’s international success.
The nomination reveal event, where candidates for every category will be disclosed, is set for October 14 at 6 PM KST and will be broadcast globally via Mnet and YouTube.
This year’s MAMA Awards will also highlight a new theme titled “BIG BLUR: What is Real?”—an exploration of the convergence between industries, cultures, and artistic expressions.
Notably, the 2024 MAMA Awards will be particularly significant as they will be hosted in the United States for the first time, taking place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on November 21 and continuing at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan, on November 22 and 23.
