Fans Invoke Andrew Garfield in Response to Elizabeth Olsen’s MCU Remarks

Being associated with a character from the Marvel universe comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to denying involvement in new films. A prime example of this phenomenon is Elizabeth Olsen.

Currently, Olsen is promoting her new movie, The Assessment, prompting numerous inquiries regarding her iconic role as Wanda Maximoff. Fans last saw her as the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where her character faced a dramatic ending. It’s important to note that while the narrative suggested death, there remains ambiguity, especially with teasers like Agatha All Along insinuating that death may not be permanent in the Marvel realm.

Interestingly, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Olsen was questioned about her future with Marvel, particularly about the Russo Brothers possibly extending her contract. She clarified, “No, I’m back [in the States].I just finished [Panic Carefully].I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].” This response has led many fans to interpret her statement as a denial of her involvement in Avengers: Doomsday.

Yet, skepticism lingers among fans. History shows that when she denies participating in certain projects, audiences often think otherwise. Take, for instance, the expectations surrounding her potential appearance in Agatha All Along, which ultimately did not materialize despite fervent speculation.

Olsen explained her absence from returning to Wanda’s story arc by sharing her reflections on her career choices in relation to Marvel. She stated, “I didn’t realize this until about six years ago, but because Marvel and its influence takes up so much physical time and space in the world, it’s really important for me to make choices outside of Marvel that reflect my own taste.” This indicates her desire for creative freedom and a broader exploration of diverse roles.

Have We Been Misled Before?

The trend of actors denying their roles has created a culture of distrust among fans. For instance, Andrew Garfield famously misled audiences during the promotion of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Similarly, Dafne Keen played coy about potential appearances in The Acolyte, which leaves fans questioning the integrity of such statements from even the most honest actors.

Even with her candid approach, many continue to inquire if Olsen might reconsider her stance on rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one of the few Marvel actors whose previous denials have proven true, fans find themselves caught between hope and skepticism regarding her return as Wanda.

While I personally yearn for Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda to return—perhaps even during a significant ensemble event—I fully respect her decision-making process. Ultimately, if and when she reclaims the role, I trust that it will align with her vision for herself and for Wanda.
