Fans of Jeon Somi have voiced their discontent regarding the K-pop sensation’s infrequent music releases since her debut in 2019. This feedback raises questions about the management and promotional strategies surrounding the artist.

From Contestant to Rising Star

The Canadian-Korean singer first captured attention as the champion of the reality competition show, Produce 101, and later became a member of the popular project group, I. O.I. After I. O.I disbanded, Somi transitioned from JYP Entertainment to The Black Label, a YG Entertainment subsidiary, hoping for a more fruitful musical path.

Solo Career Highlights and Challenges

Making her solo debut in June 2019 with the catchy single “Birthday, ”Somi subsequently released her first studio album, XOXO, in 2021. While several of her tracks, including the notable top-five hit “Fast Forward”in 2023, have resonated with audiences, the scarcity of her output remains a concern. Her latest release, “Ice Cream, ”arrived in August 2024, standing as her first musical endeavor in nearly a year.

Fan Disappointment and Agency Criticism

Fans have expressed frustration over Somi’s inconsistent song releases, citing that she has only unveiled 15 tracks since her signing with The Black Label. Many have pointed out that she has not yet created a formal fan club, developed merchandise like a lightstick, or organized a solo concert—key elements that facilitate a connection between K-pop artists and their supporters. Moreover, her promotional activities have been notably limited, with few appearances on music shows or engaging behind-the-scenes content.
