Fans Celebrate G-DRAGON’s Comeback After 7 Years with New Single ‘POWER’ – “Let’s Break Records Again, King!”

On Thursday, October 31, 2024, G-DRAGON made a highly anticipated return to the music scene with his new single, POWER, marking his first release in seven years. The official music video premiered on YouTube at 6 PM (KST) and is under the auspices of his Korean agency, Galaxy Corporation, along with the independent label EMPIRE.

In a remarkable feat, POWER climbed to No. 2 on the MelOn chart within just one hour of its launch, only outperformed by BLACKPINK’s Rosé and Bruno Mars’ track APT. According to Kpop Charts, G-DRAGON’s comeback single also reached the top spot on the Bugs music chart in South Korea.

Observant fans quickly pointed out that the music video for POWER appeared to hint at the tracklist for his upcoming solo album. Notably, the front display of a subway train showcased titles such as HOME SWEET HOME and I BELONG TO YOU, cleverly set in place of standard route destinations. The rumored tracklist is believed to include songs like TAKE ME, POWER, TOO BAD, 보니아나, DRAMA, and GYORO-DROP.

Excitement among fans was palpable as they took to social media to celebrate G-DRAGON’s comeback. One enthusiastic follower remarked on X:

“Oh, he’s about to debut with a RAK I’m afraid! Let’s go break records again, King!”

Fans likened his return to the music industry to that of Western superstar Rihanna, who is also set to release new music after an eight-year break.

“For those who don’t follow K-pop, this is comparable to Rihanna making her grand comeback,”one fan expressed.

“Seven years later. I can’t believe I’m finally listening to new Kwon Ji-yong music. The King is truly back,”another fan chimed in.

“Speaking for everyone, this is one of the most incredible comebacks—a fun, laid-back track with clever lyrics that delve into the profound impact and influence of media worldwide,”another fan added.

Additionally, fans noticed the symbolism of the number “88”showcased at the conclusion of the music video, representing G-DRAGON’s return after 88 weeks (equivalent to 7 years).

“I can’t believe GD made us wait 88 months to release his new single and even added ’88’ at the end of his music video,”one fan commented.

“It seems we’re returning to the pop-ballad style of GD (Jiyong) as it used to be. This gives off a vibe reminiscent of the ‘Don’t Leave’ era,”another fan observed.

“He’s just brilliant for this—welcome back, King!”another fan concluded.

G-DRAGON: The Pioneering Icon of K-pop’s Global Success

Known widely as G-DRAGON and born as Kwon Ji-yong, he is a South Korean singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, and fashion influencer. His ascent to international fame began with the band BIGBANG, which debuted in 2006 under YG Entertainment.

With G-DRAGON leading the group as its primary songwriter, BIGBANG achieved significant milestones, shaping the K-pop landscape with unforgettable hits like Fantastic Baby, Bang Bang Bang, and Haru Haru.

His flamboyant hairstyles, eclectic fashion choices, and genre-defying music quickly established him as a bold trendsetter. G-DRAGON launched his solo career with the release of his debut album, Heartbreaker, in 2009, which enjoyed immediate success, with over 300,000 copies sold in South Korea alone.

He followed this with his first extended play, One of a Kind, in 2012, which experienced remarkable commercial success, topping various Asian charts and earning him the title of “Best Male Solo Artist”at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Furthermore, in March 2012, he made history as the first K-pop artist to have a Korean album featured on the Billboard 200.

G-DRAGON has achieved three solo entries on the Billboard 200 and held the record for the most such entries among K-pop artists until recently, currently sharing this record with J-Hope and RM of BTS.

In a short span of two hours, POWER garnered over 1.4 million views on YouTube, highlighting the immense interest in G-DRAGON’s return.
