Grand Theft Hamlet, an indie film crafted entirely within the realm of GTA Online, is set to hit theaters in the US and UK shortly. The story revolves around two unemployed actors who attempt to stage William Shakespeare’s renowned play, Hamlet, within the virtual landscape of the game. Remarkably, this fan-made project has already been screened at several film festivals and received significant acclaim, boasting an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% as of now.
Written and directed by the talented duo of Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, with additional contributions from associate writer and director Mark Oosterveen, Grand Theft Hamlet’s concept emerged when the actors discovered an open theater located in Los Santos—specifically, the Vinewood Bowl in the Vinewood Hills. According to the film’s official website, close-ups and sweeping landscape shots were filmed using the in-game phone camera.

The situation escalates as law enforcement arrives, leading to one actor’s tragic demise amidst the disorder, marking the end of the clip.
According to MUBI, Grand Theft Hamlet is scheduled for a theatrical debut in the US, as indicated in their X post, although a specific release date remains unconfirmed. The post notes that the film may also be available for global streaming, though no particular streaming platforms have been identified yet.
In line with a report from Screen Daily, UK audiences can expect the film to be launched in cinemas on December 6, 2024. Consequently, fans in the UK eager to see this unique GTA Online feature might not have to wait much longer.
