After extensive development, Wube Software has unveiled the much-anticipated expansion for their renowned factory-building and automation game, Factorio. This expansion, titled Space Age, has been in the works since the main game’s official release in 2019, with the first insights shared with fans in 2023. Featuring a space-themed factory design, new planets to explore, advanced elevated rails, and a wealth of new systems, the Factorio: Space Age expansion is now ready for players.
The expansion begins where the primary quests of the base game conclude, as players embark on launching rockets into the cosmos. They can now traverse the universe utilizing space platforms, which gather asteroids for resources and transport cargo between various planets. Each of the four new planets presents unique environmental challenges and dangers, pushing players to tackle fresh obstacles in their mining and crafting journeys.
Below are some of the key features introduced in the expansion:
- Inclusion of space platforms for item requests and cargo delivery via rockets between planets.
- Introduction of the volcanic planet Vulcanus, rich with new resources, structures, items, recipes, and metallurgy-focused technologies.
- Addition of Gleba, a swampy planet offering new agricultural resources, structures, items, recipes, and technologies.
- Arrival of Fulgora, a storm-laden desert planet with new resources, structures, items, recipes, and technologies centered on electromagnetism.
- Introduction of Aquilo, an icy planet featuring resources, structures, items, recipes, and technologies focused on cryogenics.
- New quality system for items, entities, and equipment, providing various bonuses for higher-quality versions.
- Enhanced rail options including ramps, supports, and elevated rails for bridge construction.
- Deployment of new stack inserters (previously known as bulk inserters), allowing for layered item loading onto transport belts.
Alongside the expansion’s debut, a substantial update was rolled out for the base Factorio game, upgrading it to version 2.0. This update brings a wealth of new train and rail control options, an in-game Factoriopedia, an improved user interface, diverse maps and overlays for efficient inspection and modification of factory setups, and numerous other enhancements.
