Fact Check: Walmart’s Cancellation of Taylor Swift’s $150 Million Clothing Line – Did Politics Play a Role? Viral Rumor Investigated

Recently, a viral rumor surfaced claiming that Walmart had canceled a $150 million clothing line collaboration with pop sensation Taylor Swift due to political reasons. This claim has been thoroughly debunked.

On October 2, 2024, a page named “America—Love It or Leave It”shared a claim through a now-deleted Facebook post, suggesting that Walmart’s cancellation was due to Swift being labeled a “political star.”This speculation gained traction after Taylor Swift publicly endorsed United States presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Instagram.

However, the assertion has proven to be false, as the Facebook page itself noted in its bio that the content is fictional. Consequently, the allegation that Walmart canceled the $150 million clothing line collaboration with Taylor Swift is simply untrue.

False Claim: Walmart’s Alleged Cancellation of Taylor Swift’s $150M Clothing Line

The aforementioned Facebook post asserted that Walmart, the American multinational retail corporation, had scrapped a $150 million clothing line collaborative venture with international music icon Taylor Swift based on political reasons. This claim was ultimately found to be baseless.

While the post was later deleted, it had already garnered over 2000 reactions. The statement misleadingly suggested:

“Walmart Cancels $150 Million Taylor Swift Kids Clothing Line: ‘We Paid for a Star, Not a Political Sideshow.”

The truth behind the inaccuracy stems from the introductory description of the Facebook page “America – Love It or Leave It,” which read:

“A subsidiary of the America’s Last Line of Defense network of trollery. Nothing on this page is real.”

The parent Facebook page, America’s Last Line of Defense, is known for generating fake or exaggerated news stories as a form of satire, often to lampoon current events or political situations.

It is crucial to note that the URL for America’s Last Line of Defense implies it is a satire site (ALLOD Satire). While the page is currently unavailable, it explicitly mentioned in its ‘About Us’ section that all content is not based on reality:

“The flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery. Nothing on this page is real,”the page stated.

Additionally, the page linked to the Dunning Kruger Times website, which also identifies itself as a subsidiary of America’s Last Line of Defense. Their ‘About Us’ section claimed they are a “network of parody”:

“Dunning-Kruger-Times.com is a subsidiary of the America’s Last Line of Defense network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery,”the page read.

Most importantly, this viral rumor is unfounded because neither Taylor Swift nor Walmart has ever announced any clothing line collaboration. In contrast, another American retailer, Target, has recently launched a children’s clothing range inspired by Taylor Swift’s tour outfits, available both online and in physical stores.

Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris

On September 11, 2024, Taylor Swift took to her Instagram to share a photograph of herself in a black high-neck top, holding a cat. In her post, she endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, explaining that Harris reflects her beliefs.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,”Swift expressed.

Swift clarified in her post that she made this public endorsement following a false AI interpretation that claimed she had endorsed Donald Trump. She emphasized that due to “the dangers of spreading misinformation,”she felt compelled to be transparent about her voting choice.

Furthermore, Swift mentioned that she thoroughly researched before deciding to support a specific party.

The upcoming United States presidential election is set for Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
