Fact Check: Official Announcement on Harry Potter TV Show Cast

The Harry Potter TV series is officially in development, with each season set to adapt one book from the beloved original series. Announced in April 2023 by Warner Bros. Discovery, CEO David Zaslav confirmed that J.K. Rowling will play a key role in the project. The series aims to faithfully capture the original storyline, reviving the iconic characters for multiple seasons.

On September 9, 2024, the official Instagram handle of Harry Potter shared an open casting call for the Harry Potter TV show. The announcement sought children across Ireland and the UK to portray the beloved trio: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

The production team is looking for young actors between the ages of 9 and 11; however, no official cast has been confirmed yet. Any rumors suggesting otherwise are completely unfounded.

Harry Potter TV Show Focuses on Diverse Casting Choices

The casting call shared on Instagram included a note emphasizing their commitment to an inclusive and diverse cast for the upcoming television series.

“We are committed to inclusive, diverse casting. For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated,” the announcement stated.

Channing Dungey, the Chairperson of Warner Bros. Television, revealed in a conversation with Variety on January 22, 2024, that the production team is engaged in discussions with various writers to identify the leader of the franchise.

“The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be, and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations. The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12,” she explained.

Daniel Radcliffe, in an interview with Comic Book, published on July 3, 2023, expressed that he has no intention of appearing in the new television series.

“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere. So I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way,” he stated.

The Director and Showrunner for the Harry Potter TV Series Confirmed

On June 26, 2024, HBO confirmed that Francesca Gardiner will serve as the writer and showrunner for the Harry Potter TV series, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. The two previously collaborated on HBO’s acclaimed drama Succession.

Francesca Gardiner is recognized for her writing and producing talents in successful television series such as His Dark Materials, Crossing Lines, and Killing Eve. Mark Mylod has a distinguished directorial background with shows like Game of Thrones, Entourage, Shameless, and The Affair.

Warner Bros. Discovery initially announced the Harry Potter TV show would premiere on its platform Max. They teased the scripted series dedicated to the books on their YouTube channel on April 23, 2023, but it was later confirmed that this much-anticipated revival will be an original HBO series.
