Fact Check: Authenticity of the Chris Evans and Rami Malek Stargate Remake Poster Explained – Viral Image Debunked

Recently, a poster featuring a purported remake of Stargate starring Chris Evans and Rami Malek went viral on social media, claiming the film would debut in theaters in December 2024. This speculation first surfaced on Facebook when the page YODA BBY ABY announced that MGM Amazon Studios was allegedly set to release the film.

The rumors were accompanied by a graphic reminiscent of the original 1994 movie poster, which declared:

“STARGATE REMAKE COMING TO CINEMAS!!! MGM Amazon Studios is set to bring Stargate back to theaters in December 2024. Chris Evans takes on the role of the brave Colonel Jack O’Neil, while Rami Malek plays the astute Dr. Daniel Jackson. The duo is set to embark on a thrilling quest to Abydos, where they will confront the formidable Sun God Ra, leading to an unforgettable showdown. This exhilarating remake paves the way for a new trilogy that aims to broaden the Stargate universe in exciting new directions.”

However, the fact-checking organization Snopes.com has dismissed the claim, noting that there is no credible information from trusted sources confirming the existence of the remake or its release schedule.

Additionally, the IMDb pages for both Chris Evans and Rami Malek do not include any mention of the supposed Stargate remake in their upcoming film listings.

Furthermore, YODA BBY ABY openly identifies itself as a satirical platform, with its description stating:

“I’m just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news.”

This Facebook account has also shared numerous phony movie posters, including recent ones featuring a supposed Jem film with Sabrina Carpenter and a Hercules adaptation starring Alan Ritchson and Danny DeVito.

Exploring Other Rumors Surrounding a Stargate Remake

The original Stargate, released in 1994, starred Kurt Russell as Colonel Jonathan J. O’Neil and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson. The story revolves around a unique “stargate,”which acts as a portal for interdimensional travel.

The Stargate franchise expanded over the years, leading to additional films, a television series, spin-offs, an animated show, and web series. In 2014, the possibility of a reboot gained traction on social media, following an announcement from MGM Studios that the original film’s creators were collaborating on a new project.

“Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, alongside Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, are working together to create a new feature film trilogy that reimagines the 1994 film Stargate. This news was shared by Gary Barber, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. Emmerich, noted as the director and co-writer of the original film alongside Devlin, is on board to direct, with Devlin producing,”a press statement read at the time.

Unfortunately, Devlin later indicated that plans for the reboot were halted. In a 2016 interview with Empire Magazine, he stated that the project was “not looking so good”and eventually “kind of fell apart.”

Nevertheless, discussions of a potential reboot resurfaced following Amazon Studios’ acquisition of MGM in 2021. As per Deadline, a report in 2023 hinted at prospective reboots for various series, including Stargate, Legally Blonde, and Pink Panther, among others. Notably, the film adaptation of the sci-fi saga may be prioritized.

At the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Roland Emmerich expressed his disillusionment with the reboot, citing the complexities of the intellectual property’s ownership as a significant hindrance.

“The challenge stems from the fact that it’s a very complicated IP. Multiple parties own rights to it, making it extremely challenging to navigate. To be honest, I no longer wish to pursue it, I’ve moved on,”he stated.

As of now, there has been no new information released concerning the Stargate reboot.
