Exploring Windows 11’s Innovative Drag to Tray File Sharing Feature: Hands-On Review of the Leak

Microsoft is on the verge of enhancing file sharing in Windows 11 with an innovative feature known as the **Drag Tray**.Available in the latest Insider Preview Build 22635.4805, this functionality streamlines the process, allowing users to share files seamlessly by dragging them to a designated area at the top of the screen. Currently, this feature is not fully rolled out and requires third-party tools for activation.

The unveiling of the Drag Tray arose from a keen observation by popular Windows analyst Phantomofearth, who showcased how effortlessly a file could be dragged from File Explorer to the Drag Tray, triggering a prompt that reads “Drag here to Share”.This intuitive feature puts Windows 11 ahead in providing a more traditional yet innovative approach to file sharing.

Windows 11 users enjoy an array of options for sharing files, including **Nearby Sharing** for sharing with other PCs, or leveraging applications like Outlook, Teams, and PhoneLink for sharing with smartphones. Typically, sharing a file involves a simple right-click action, where users have two options to share: one from the command menu and another from the contextual menu, thus making sharing quick and straightforward.

While this procedure seems effortless for desktop users accustomed to mice and keyboards, touch-based users may find the experience lacking in fluidity. With whispers of a new, smaller Surface Pro potentially launching this spring, there is speculation that Microsoft might officially roll out the Drag Tray feature alongside it, further enhancing the touch-friendly aspect of Windows 11.

In hands-on tests conducted by Windows Latest, it was observed that the drag-to-share functionality performed exceptionally well, meeting users’ expectations and possibly becoming a habitual action for everyday tasks. This enhancement positions Windows 11 as a more touch-capable operating system, reflecting Microsoft’s commitment to improving user experience.

Additionally, Windows 11’s Aero Snap layout comes into play when dragging app windows into position, yet it’s important to note that the Drag Tray does not interfere with this snap functionality. For instance, while dragging an app, the Aero Snap bar will display without any text indicators. In contrast, dragging files will reveal the Drag Tray with the prompt “Drag here to Share”, simplifying the sharing process.

Interestingly, the Drag Tray appears whenever a file is dragged—be it for moving or copying—but sharing options such as Phone Link and Outlook only materialize when dragging to the top edge. This might feel a bit clunky for some users, and there are suggestions that it would be more intuitive for the sharing overlay to activate only when the cursor crosses the File Explorer’s title bar or the top of the screen. However, Microsoft may be intentionally setting this up to familiarize users with the Drag Tray.

Moreover, testing revealed that this feature works when dragging files from the desktop to the top edge of the screen, which broadens its utility. However, there’s room for enhancement. A noteworthy suggestion from testers is the integration of the Drag Tray for sharing images directly from the Edge browser, as dragging an image to File Explorer currently creates a copy rather than a shared file.

It’s crucial to remember that this feature must be manually activated each time, which may deter some users. Yet, the coexistence of both drag methods could enhance versatility in file handling.
