With the impending release of Killing Floor 3, players are poised to experience a new level of weapon customization in their battles against the notorious Zeds. Set in the year 2091, nearly seven decades after the events of Killing Floor 2, this sequel introduces evolved threats alongside enhanced survival tactics for players.
In this latest installment of the first-person action/horror shooter series, players will not only have access to a wide array of weapons but can also enjoy unprecedented customization options. Recent insights from Game Rant reveal a conversation with Bill Munk, the lead combat designer for Killing Floor 3, who elaborated on the introduction of customizable weapon modifications.

Personalizing Your Firepower
According to Munk, players can take full control over their weapon loadouts, choosing names, unique skins, and even adding quirky trinkets like a miniature Clot head to their guns. More significantly, players can modify weapon functionality to suit their combat style. As Munk elaborates:
“We wanted people to feel like they could personalize a weapon and have it be their weapon. Any weapon you’re using, you’ll start acquiring schematics from killing the Zeds. You also have spy cameras, different terminals and stuff, to get components, and you use them to build the mods. We have over 180 different mods that you can put on weapons, and it changes the nature of the weapon, its power, and how it functions. You can really customize it to how you want to play.”
However, players should be strategic about their spending on weapon modifications. Each mod comes with a cost, necessitating careful planning based on the initial budget provided at the start of each operation. Advancing through levels will eventually expand a player’s budget, enabling them to acquire more advanced weaponry over time.
Mastering Weapon Stats and Modifications
Munk highlighted that weapon modifications hold additional depth beyond initial upgrades. Once players unlock a modification, they can further enhance it through leveling. This progression is critical for thriving against Zed hordes in Killing Floor 3. He explains:
“Another element that I think fans are going to enjoy is that, with every mod, you can make it once you have the schematic. You can level that up three times, you need resources from playing to do that, and when you hit the highest level of that mod, a special stat becomes active. We’ve made a whole bunch of them, and it’s random which stat applies onto that mod. If you don’t like it, you can recycle, but it’s like a min-maxer’s dream with the mods.”
With such a plethora of available mods, the development team anticipates that players will discover unique combinations, possibly leading to unexpected gameplay dynamics. As the game is designed to ramp up stress levels, especially in higher difficulty settings, adaptability will be key for survival.
Going forward, Killing Floor 3 promises an engaging mix of creativity and challenge that fans of the franchise can look forward to.
