The True Story Behind Jailbreak: Love on the Run
The daring prison escape triggered an 11-day nationwide manhunt. While Vicky White and Casey White’s escape occurred in 2022, their story truly began in 2020, when they first formed a romantic bond. Vicky, a seasoned corrections officer at Lauderdale County Jail, developed a close relationship with Casey, who was serving a 75-year sentence at the facility.
This relationship resulted in Vicky giving Casey preferential treatment, including extended yard time and additional food. Although their connection was mostly kept secret, several inmates suspected the two were involved. In 2022, as Casey awaited trial for the murder of Connie Ridgeway, circumstances changed drastically.
On April 29, Vicky escorted Casey out of the prison under the pretense of attending a mental health evaluation at the county courthouse. Given Vicky’s position, she could easily facilitate this escape, having served as a corrections officer for over 17 years.
However, neither of them returned, and an investigation revealed that no mental health examination had been arranged for Casey White. While authorities initially speculated that Casey might have coerced Vicky, CCTV footage and other evidence suggested their escape was premeditated.
Moreover, Vicky had recently acquired firearms and men’s clothing and sold her home for significantly less than market value. This behavior ultimately prompted a nationwide manhunt for the couple. They were known to have swapped vehicles, stayed in different motels, and were sighted in multiple cities.
On May 9, 2024, law enforcement located the two in Evansville, Indiana, resulting in a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, their vehicle overturned, leading to a dramatic turn of events. As authorities closed in, Vicky tragically shot herself, while Casey surrendered peacefully and was charged on May 11, 2022.
After accepting a plea deal, Casey is now serving a life sentence in prison. This astonishing incident shocked the nation, particularly due to Vicky White’s choices. A respected figure in corrections, Vicky sacrificed her long and fulfilling career for love.
While Casey survived the chase, the consequences of Vicky’s assistance led to her heartbreaking end. The documentary Jailbreak: Love on the Run provides an in-depth exploration of this case, featuring interviews with former inmates to give additional context.
