The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is making its return with an exciting second season, aptly titled The Book of Carol. In this installment, our beloved crossbow-wielding zombie hunter, Daryl Dixon, has some backup. Melissa McBride, who has been a series staple since the first season of this iconic show, discovers that her long-time companion is in peril.
She sets out on a quest to the zombie-infested landscapes of France to rescue Dixon. Season 2 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon delves into the unparalleled connection between these two fan-favorite characters, a bond that has sparked extensive discussion on social media over the years.
During a roundtable interview, we posed a question to the cast of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2 to describe the relationship between Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier. Much like social media discussions, there was no single, clear-cut answer.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2 cast describes Carol and Daryl as everything from soulmates to best friends
Anne Charrier, who plays Genet, the show’s ultimate antagonist, was charming and cordial during the interview. She endeavored to unpack the bond shared by Carol and Daryl:
“I would say they are family. It’s something like a brotherhood—a very strong one. They both lost their families around the same time. So, I’ve always viewed it that way.”
Carol Peletier suffers the devastating loss of her daughter Sophia early in The Walking Dead. Meanwhile, Daryl Dixon faces similar grief following a complicated relationship with his brother Merle, whose story ends early in the series. According to Charrier, this shared trauma fosters a unique connection between the two:
“As you say, soulmates who meet at just the right moment… they become family because it’s that perfect time for them.”
Charrier further noted that their relationship eschews a romantic angle, which she views as refreshing in contemporary television:
“From my perspective, it’s incredibly meaningful to depict relationships between a woman and a man that are not romantic. That’s part of what makes it so special.”
Romain Levi, who plays Codron, another antagonist from season 1, commented on the ambiguity surrounding Daryl and Carol’s connection:
“It’s a tough question without a perfect answer because there are so many beautiful dynamics between them. Perhaps it’s a love relationship. Maybe a friendship. Soulmates? I honestly don’t know what’s in store for them. Anything is possible.”
Veteran actor Eriq Ebouaney, who portrays Fallou in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, shares a romantic view on the duo’s relationship.
“I believe they are soulmates. Carol’s soul is seeking Daryl’s in Europe, particularly in France. Truly, they are soulmates—it’s very beautiful to watch.”
Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, who plays Laurent, the child Messiah, succinctly noted:
“They’re just best friends forever, aren’t they?”
