Confirmation from Halo Studio Head on Transitioning to Unreal Engine 5
On October 6, 2024, Pierre Hintze, the Head of Halo Studio, announced the formal decision to migrate from the proprietary Slipspace Engine to Unreal Engine.
He described this transition as the start of a new era for the Halo series, emphasizing that the objective is not merely to enhance development efficiency but to fundamentally transform the game creation process.
In an exclusive discussion with Xbox Wire, the Studio Head elaborated:
“Breaking down Halo, we see two distinct eras: Chapter 1 – Bungie, and Chapter 2 – 343 Industries. There’s a demand for more from our audience. So, we aim not just to improve how we create but to change our entire approach to developing Halo games. Today marks the start of this new chapter.”
Elizabeth van Wyck, COO for Xbox Studios, added that the primary motivation behind the engine transition is to enhance not only the Halo development process but also grant the creative team the flexibility to explore other projects alongside the beloved first-person shooter.
She stated:
“Our past methods of creating Halo may not be conducive to future game development. Our discussions focused on how we can empower our team to concentrate more on game creation rather than just on the tools and engines we use.”
Further comments from Chris Matthews, the Studio Art Director, revealed that the Slipspace Engine, which has been in use for over 25 years, is no longer capable of meeting modern gaming demands. The advantages and capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 far exceed those of its predecessor, and attempting to replicate such features on Slipspace would require an immense amount of time and resources.
This transition undoubtedly marks a positive shift for Halo Studios, promising gamers enhanced development outcomes for their cherished first-person shooter experience.
