Understanding Rafayel’s Character

Initially, Rafayel’s relationship with the protagonist appears quite indirect when compared to characters like Xavier, her co-worker, and Zayne, her childhood friend. Their paths cross serendipitously early in the game, leaving little indication of a future connection.

Nonetheless, the protagonist soon discovers Rafayel’s reputation in the art community through her everyday interactions. Notably, several patrons of his works have reported unsettling psychological crises. Her investigation leads her to Rafayel’s studio, where she unravels that a particular shade of paint he uses contains a hallucinogenic substance, which also attracts Wanderers.

After resolving the immediate threat, Rafayel engages the heroine as his bodyguard, merging her roles as a Deepspace Hunter with the need for personal security due to his prominence as an artist. Initially taken aback by the proposal, she is swayed by his promise to assist with her family’s mysterious deaths.

In the course of unraveling the mystery surrounding the tainted coral stone in Rafayel’s paint, the duo faces disaster when their boat capsizes, leaving them stranded on an island near Linkon City. During a confrontation with hostile Wanderers, Rafayel surprises everyone with his combat skills, exhibiting bravery in the face of danger. In a moment of crisis, he mysteriously transforms into a merman to rescue her from drowning, although she remains oblivious to this revelation as the main plot unfolds.

Rafayel’s connections in the art scene allow him to bridge the heroine with some of Linkon City’s more dubious figures, granting her access to influential contacts as she pursues leads in the criminal underbelly of the N109 Zone.

Distinct from his fellow love interests, Rafayel’s character exudes reliability issues, often avoiding commitments for more delightful pursuits, frequently embellishing his trials when perceived as neglected by the heroine. However, his playful nature brings a lighter tone, often generating amusement rather than genuine annoyance amid his flirtations.

Unlocking Rafayel’s Story

As a central figure among Love and Deepspace’s romantic prospects, players can begin their relationship with Rafayel shortly after embarking on their journey. He becomes available for interaction after completing Chapter 2-11 of Under Deepspace.

For those eager to engage with Rafayel early, it’s possible to unlock some of his Memories before reaching this point, particularly if you explore the gacha mechanics right away. While the free-play battles may be limited early on, it’s still a viable option.

Exploring Rafayel’s Lore (Spoilers Ahead)

Rafayel is, in fact, the God of the Tides, a monarch-deity from Lemuria, an advanced underwater civilization that has unfortunately faced extinction in the current timeline of the game.

His attempt to perform a certain ritual backfires significantly, as Lemuria’s decline begins post-ceremony, leading to the heroine’s mysterious disappearance and her eventual emergence as the Witch of the Abyss—a figure shrouded in fear among the people of Lemuria. Despite restoring her memories, Rafayel learns their futures together are doomed, bound by a ceremony reminiscent of a divine union.

As years roll by, the struggle for Lemuria escalates as Lemurians face persecution by humans interested in the secrets of their immortality.Rafayel’s animosity and distrust towards humanity deepens, complicated by his lingering feelings for the heroine. Together with other survivors, he seeks refuge on land, taking on human identities, including a celebrated opera singer named Mo. Yet, to avoid exposure due to their unique aging process, he sheds this identity and ultimately becomes a renowned painter.

In an intriguing twist, Rafayel’s initial meeting with the protagonist occurred during her childhood, after she rescued him from a shore. They vowed to reunite there annually, but due to her illness causing memory loss, she forgets him each time. Nonetheless, Rafayel stays close, even becoming an art lecturer at her university. Their first meeting within the story is later revealed to have been orchestrated by Rafayel himself.

Lastly, Rafayel’s lore hints at a possible future where he becomes the Abysswalker—an assassin in a desolate Earth transformed into a barren desert post-apocalypse. Here, he infiltrates the castle of a princess-like figure, another reincarnation of the heroine, who remains revered yet isolated due to her innate powers. A pivotal moment arises as Rafayel contemplates carrying out an assassination to revive his lost civilization but hesitates after uncovering shared memories of their past lives. Ultimately, in a desperate act, he erases her memory—a tragic move to protect her, leading to her eventual escape into the desert in search of him.
