Exploring the Ideal Metaphor through Persona: The ReFantazio Crossover Event

Among the notable releases from Atlus in the past year, Metaphor: ReFantazio has emerged as a standout title. This engaging high-fantasy JRPG marks the company’s first original intellectual property since the launch of Catherine in 2011. Impressively, despite not belonging to a pre-existing franchise, Metaphor: ReFantazio quickly became Atlus’s best-selling game, achieving over one million copies sold on its release day. Furthermore, it garnered significant recognition at The Game Awards 2024, trailing only Astro Bot and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in nominations.

Atlus has expressed its ambition for Metaphor: ReFantazio to become a cornerstone franchise, alongside established series like Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. To realize this vision, the company might consider enhancing visibility through strategic collaborations. While integrating Metaphor-themed content into popular games like Fortnite could be an option, collaboration with its own franchises could yield even more synergistic results. For instance, a crossover with Persona could be beneficial since both titles share similar gameplay mechanics. A collaboration with Persona 5: The Phantom X, the latest entry in the Persona universe, presents a promising avenue for expansion.

Understanding Persona 5: The Phantom X

Though it is part of the widely loved Persona series, many gamers may not be aware of Persona 5: The Phantom X. The game is currently exclusive to select East Asian markets, including China and South Korea, making it inaccessible to Western audiences. As a mobile gacha game that serves as a spin-off of the acclaimed Persona 5, it features a fresh cast and is primarily developed by Black Wings Game Studio under Perfect World Games.

Crossover Growth and Collaborations

Since its open beta launch in April 2024, Persona 5: The Phantom X has sparked discussions regarding potential future developments. At an event in Shanghai on July 12, 2024, developers from Atlus and Black Wings unveiled plans for the game, including intent to introduce it to Western markets and initiate crossover events. These collaborations would initially involve other Persona game titles, specifically Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, and Persona 4 Golden, in that sequence.

Following the confirmation of such collaborations, the game executed its first crossover event with Persona 5 Royal. Released in parts, this collaboration’s first segment arrived in December 2024, introducing Kasumi Yoshizawa, a prominent Phantom Thief, as a new playable character, along with an innovative dungeon set in a research institute.

Introducing Metaphor: ReFantazio to New Audiences

To maximize the impact of its new title, Atlus and Black Wings Game Studio should consider incorporating a collaboration featuring Metaphor: ReFantazio within Persona 5: The Phantom X. Even without dedicating an entire dungeon to Metaphor, offering players the ability to summon characters or employ iconic weapons, such as Drakodios, could significantly increase interest. Given the differing audiences between gacha and console games, this kind of collaboration could effectively introduce Metaphor: ReFantazio to a broader player base, enhancing its reputation and consumer engagement.
