In the gripping road rage film Unhinged, Russell Crowe portrays a deranged antagonist. This psychological thriller was added to Netflix on October 14, following its initial theatrical release in 2020, where it garnered a lackluster Rotten Tomatoes score of just 48%. Despite the lukewarm critical reception, the film surged to the forefront of the US Netflix rankings on October 17 and 18, according to Flix Patrol, currently holding the #2 spot, trailing only behind the newly premiered Woman of the Hour.
The film essentially revolves around the intense cat-and-mouse dynamics of road rage, showcasing Crowe as Tom Cooper, a man who loses his cool at a traffic intersection. Following a confrontation with Rachel, a single mother, he becomes obsessed with retaliating against her perceived disrespect. As Cooper’s mental condition deteriorates throughout the film, his quest for vengeance spirals into a terrifying nightmare for Rachel.
Crowe is joined on screen by Caren Pistorius and Gabriel Bateman in this Derrick Borte-directed feature. Notably, Unhinged unfolds in New Orleans, also known as the Crescent City, which served as a primary filming location alongside several other sites in the area.
Unhinged Primarily Filmed in New Orleans
New Orleans serves as the main setting for Unhinged, with filming taking place at various recognizable locales throughout the city. Notably, the famous Crescent City Connection Bridge makes an appearance, where Crowe’s character first encounters Rachel, who drives an old Volvo. This iconic bridge, spanning the Mississippi River, also features prominently during the thrilling car chase between the two leads.
This bridge is among the busiest in the nation, rendering it nearly impossible to close for filming without impacting extensive traffic in downtown. F. Stanley Pearse, the location manager for Unhinged, explained the logistics in a July 2019 article for Nola, stating:
“Shutting down the entire bridge to the west bank for daytime shoots was impossible…but we were able to obtain the use of the HOV lane.”
For the highway scenes, Hayne Boulevard was also utilized, alongside the Ursuline Academy, which stood in for the fictional Wesley Oaks Elementary School that Rachel’s son, Kyle, attends.
Other Filming Locations for Unhinged in Louisiana
While much of the filming occurred in New Orleans, various scenes were also shot outside the city, with the production primarily remaining within Louisiana.
Kenner
The suburban city of Kenner became another significant filming spot for the movie. It featured a restaurant named Darrow’s Diner, where Tom intended to meet Rachel, but instead encountered her friend Andy. The diner scene was actually filmed at Franny’s Place Family in real life.
According to Nola, additional scenes were shot at several locations in Kenner, including a residence on Chateau Boulevard and at Chateau Estates. A dramatic moment, where a front door was blown off, was filmed at a house in Woodlake Estates.
Jefferson Parish
Key scenes, such as the pivotal moment when Tom pursues Rachel after she speeds away, were filmed on Edwards Avenue in Elmwood, a suburb located within Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. This particular scene was critical to the unfolding plot of Unhinged.
