Exploring the Feud: Nicki Minaj vs. Travis Scott – A History of Their Rivalry

Nicki Minaj is undeniably the queen of rap. With over 15 years in the music business, Minaj remains at the pinnacle of the rap genre, recognized as the wealthiest female rap artist and the most followed rapper on Instagram, attracting both male and female audiences.

Throughout her career, Nicki Minaj has experienced a variety of feuds with fellow rap artists, including Remy Ma, Lil Kim, Latto, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion. Notably, an ongoing dispute with Travis Scott became prominent in 2018 when their albums vied for the top position on the Billboard album chart.

Recently, Sabrina Carpenter reignited the tension. Here’s a recap of the events between Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott from six years ago.

Nicki Minaj’s Competition with Travis Scott in 2018

In August 2018, both Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott launched their respective albums: Minaj’s Queen and Scott’s Astroworld. They subsequently competed for the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Hot 200 album chart.

Fans anticipated Minaj’s Queen to take the lead, making it surprising when Scott’s Astroworld surpassed her for the top chart position.

Minaj felt the sting of defeat and investigated, discovering that Scott had sold his album merchandise prior to its release, enhancing his sales and securing the No. 1 spot. She argued this constituted a breach of traditional release rules.

Adding fuel to the fire, the 41-year-old took issue with Scott’s higher sales from tour tickets, boosted by an Instagram post from Kylie Jenner, who stated she was “ready for tour”with their daughter, Stormi. Minaj expressed her frustrations on X.

This spat led to an escalation between the two rappers, with Scott allegedly aiming a jab at Minaj during a New York concert, boasting:

“Astroworld No. 1 right now, MTV VMAs make some noise!”

The conflict became even more evident at the MTV VMAs that year when Scott, originally seated behind Minaj with Kylie Jenner, opted for alternative seating. As reported by Teen Vogue, the couple was relocated to sit across from Cardi B.

Despite the drama surrounding Scott’s tour featuring Stormi, Minaj clarified that her issue was not with Kylie Jenner. During an episode of Queen Radio on August 23, 2018, she stated that it was understandable for Jenner to support her partner, declaring:

“She gotta ride with her man. Why the f**k wouldn’t she? We’re not gonna make this what it’s not… She’s a dope girl. This is strictly about music. She has nothing to do with this. My fans are not feeding into this. We love Kylie.”

Minaj Sparks Up the Feud with Scott by Supporting Sabrina Carpenter

Fast forward six years, Sabrina Carpenter recently entered a similar battle for the No. 1 album spot. Carpenter’s sixth studio album, Short N Sweet, was released on the same day as Travis’ Days Before Rodeo, a re-release to commemorate the mixtape’s tenth anniversary.

The Please singer, a self-identified Barb, drew comparisons between her situation and that of Minaj, tweeting:

“This is for Nicki.”

Nicki Minaj took notice and during an Instagram Live session in August, gave Carpenter a shoutout while her husband Kenneth Petty was present.

Later, in early September, when Carpenter’s Short N Sweet reached the No. 1 position on the Billboard album chart, Nicki sent her a gorgeous bouquet of white roses. Carpenter later shared the picture of the bouquet on her Instagram story, expressing her gratitude to Minaj with:

“I adore u @nickiminaj + the barbz: ‘) this is so thoughtful!!!! and these are so beautiful.”

Sabrina Carpenter kicked off her Short N Sweet world tour on September 24, which is set to wrap up in March next year. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 tour will begin in March 2024 and is scheduled to end in New York on October 11.
