In Chainsaw Man, Makima, as the Control Devil, pursued numerous ambitions, some inspired by the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita. Pochita notes the flawed methods Makima employed in her quest for closeness. Her ultimate aim was to establish equal relationships; however, her identity as the Control Devil meant that fear always levied an overshadowing presence in her connections.
Conversely, Nayuta, the reincarnated version of the Control Devil, has managed to fulfill and expand upon Makima’s aspirations. Although Nayuta is the embodiment of the Control Devil, her essence starkly contrasts with Makima’s. This distinction begs a closer inspection of their similarities and how Nayuta symbolizes Makima’s latent desires throughout the series.

Desire for Connections
Deep down, both Makima and Nayuta share the essence of the Control Devil, a figure associated with the pervasive fear of control. However, their ideologies and approaches to relationships diverge. Initially, Makima presented herself as a seemingly ordinary human, adept at concealing her true identity until it was ultimately revealed that she was the Control Devil. In Chapter 97, Pochita discloses in a dream that the Control Devil has always sought deep connections and longed for familial bonds.
Makima’s manipulative schemes began with Denji’s entrance into her life, where she orchestrated connections with Aki and Power as part of her strategy to create Denji’s ideal family, albeit under her controlling influence.
Her ambition to establish relationships rooted in equality continually clashed with her tendency to dominate, perpetuating a cycle of fear that stymied genuine closeness. Makima’s extreme objective of creating a “better world”involved eliminating fears to enhance overall happiness, presumably a distorted means to draw closer to Pochita, who had eliminated various Devils and contributed to a degree of tranquillity in the world.
Upon her defeat and consumption by Denji, the cycle continued with the emergence of Nayuta, who, in the wake of Makima’s demise, found herself reborn. Each Devil in this universe undergoes reincarnation upon death, emerging from Hell devoid of past memories while retaining the fears that define them.
Nayuta emerged, unearthed by Kishibe in China, reflecting Makima’s deepest aspirations. She shares several interests with Makima, including a fondness for Denji and dogs, yet her disposition markedly diverges from the controlling nature of her predecessor.

While both manifestations of the Control Devil exhibit striking similarities, the differences between them are substantial. Makima’s extensive life experience shaped her worldview, contrasting sharply with Nayuta, who was nurtured by Denji. The love and interests of Nayuta are inherently a product of her relationship with Denji, revealing how profoundly he has influenced her development.
Makima actively plotted to remove Pochita from Denji’s heart, viewing it as an essential step towards her desires. She fought fervently to ensure she was consumed by Pochita, believing it would facilitate her aim to create happiness and merge with the Chainsaw Man. Yet, in a twist of fate, Denji became her devourer instead, leading to her downfall.

Although they share commonalities, the underpinning motivations diverge significantly. Nayuta may sometimes exhibit a need to assert control, yet she is far less inclined to wield her abilities unjustly. In contrast, Makima’s manipulative tendencies led her to treat others as mere pawns in her grand design.
Denji’s connection with Nayuta is characterized by a familial bond; he affectionately regards her as his little sister, an affectionate connection absent in his interactions with Makima. Nayuta’s approach to relationships involves genuine interest rather than coercion. She eagerly tackles challenges in her education and genuinely desires to pursue knowledge.
