In Memoriam: Quincy Jones, a Music Legend Passes Away at 91
Quincy Jones, an iconic figure in the music industry, renowned for his work as a producer, songwriter, and composer, has tragically passed away at the age of 91.
On November 3, 2024, Jones died peacefully at his home in Bel Air, California, surrounded by his family. His publicist, Arnold Robinson, shared the heartbreaking announcement with NPR, stating:
“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, Jones’ passing has reignited conversations surrounding his complex relationship with illustrious hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, whose influence on the music landscape remains profound.
The Quincy Jones and Tupac Shakur Controversy Revisited
The longstanding feud between Jones and Tupac was thrust back into the spotlight following Jones’ death. This conflict originated in 1993 when Tupac publicly lambasted Jones, alleging that he failed the Black community by predominantly pursuing romantic relationships with white women. An article from Billboard dated July 8, 2024, highlighted these explosive remarks.
“All he does is stick his d**k in white b**ches and make f**ked up kids,”Tupac said in an interview with The Source.
Despite the animosity, it is noteworthy that Jones’ daughter, Kidada Jones, had a romantic relationship with Tupac in the early 1990s. Quincy Jones disclosed to the New York Times in September 2012 that he initially felt discomforted by their relationship:
“I remember one night I was dropping Rashida at Jerry’s delicatessen, and Tupac was talking to Kidada because he was falling in love with her then. Like an idiot, I went over to him, put two arms on his shoulders and said, ‘Pac, we gotta sit down and talk, man.’”
This encounter led to a turning point in their relationship. According to Jones, after a heartfelt discussion, Tupac apologized, and they quickly developed a strong bond.
“If he had had a gun, I would’ve been done. But we talked. He apologized. We became very close after that,”Jones recounted.
In light of their feud, Rashida Jones even wrote an open letter in 1993 defending her father against Tupac’s criticisms. She recently revisited those emotions in an interview with The New Yorker dated July 7, 2024, expressing her frustration with Tupac’s remarks:
“My dad doesn’t work for the government. He’s a music producer. How he chooses to live his life and who he loves is just his own business, and I’ve always felt that way.”
Rashida also confirmed that their conflict ultimately resolved amicably, with Tupac becoming part of the family. Tragically, Tupac’s life was cut short when he was fatally shot in Las Vegas on September 13, 1996.
