Exploring Paul Di’Anno’s Health Issues Following the Death of the Former Iron Maiden Singer at 66

Renowned vocalist Paul Di’Anno, who was 66 years old, tragically passed away on October 21, 2024, under circumstances that remain unclear. He is best remembered as a founding member of the iconic heavy metal band Iron Maiden and later performed with groups such as Gogmagog and Killers.

The sad news of Paul Di’Anno’s death was confirmed by his family through a heartfelt post on Facebook. Accompanied by a photograph, the message highlighted his career milestones that have left a lasting impact on the music industry.

“Although he faced significant health challenges in recent years, which confined him to a wheelchair during performances, Paul continued to captivate audiences worldwide, completing over 100 shows since 2023.”

The official cause of his passing has yet to be disclosed. In an interview with Misplaced Straws last July, Di’Anno reminisced about his early days with Iron Maiden, where he was a member from 1978 to 1981, sharing that he and the band’s bassist, Steve Harris, were schoolmates. He mentioned that Iron Maiden was actively seeking a singer during that time.

“A friend of mine, Trevor Soll, who was familiar with both me and Steve, informed me that ‘Maiden are looking for a singer, would you like to audition?’ Honestly, I was more inclined toward punk music at that period. Nevertheless, I went there, created new lyrics for a cover of ‘Dealer’ by Deep Purple, and gave it my best shot.”

For the majority of his performances, Paul Di’Anno relied on a wheelchair and addressed this situation by stating:

“I’ve endured eight years of waiting for death due to sepsis and other issues, so I refuse to let that hold me back anymore. Things are going well overall; it’s a bit of a logistical challenge, but we’re making it happen.”

Paul Di’Anno faced significant health challenges, including knee surgery in 2022

As previously indicated, the health struggles faced by the Chingford native adversely affected his career trajectory. However, Iron Maiden lent their support during his recovery, notably aiding him with medical expenses related to his knee surgery two years ago.

Initially, this surgery was postponed multiple times, necessitating a crowdfunding initiative on JustGiving to raise approximately $27,000. Paul Di’Anno had also undergone another surgery in 2016, which involved the removal of an abscess from his lungs.

In a 2019 conversation with Mariskal Rock, he disclosed that he had been battling sepsis, a condition that nearly cost him his life. He explained that he had been hospitalized multiple times over four years and elaborated on the complications from his sepsis:

“I keep suffering infections, which hinder the operation schedules on my legs. It’s been quite tough. Currently, I have only one knee; the other is gone without a replacement yet, so it’s just a temporary fix with cement.”

In June of this year, Paul Di’Anno discussed his health challenges in a conversation with The Metal Voice. He revealed that after being diagnosed with sepsis in 2015, his immune system became compromised, posing a higher risk for severe infections.

He expressed reluctance to tour, citing numerous difficulties:

“It’s not beneficial for me since I’m unable to get the necessary physiotherapy or lymphatic drainage consistently. Traveling between different locations, be it planes or buses, presents its own set of challenges. Nonetheless, performing live is incredibly uplifting for me mentally.”

Paul Di’Anno’s manager encourages fans to attend his final tour

On May 26, 2024, Paul Di’Anno’s manager announced, via a detailed statement on his Facebook page, that the Beast Resurrection Tour would be his concluding tour. The statement emphasized that, despite demand for concert tickets, this was a significant decision due to Paul’s condition.

The manager highlighted that fans would have one last opportunity to see him perform live:

“While Paul will continue to perform in the UK, future shows will be limited to larger festivals or select venues, featuring material from Battlezone, Killers, Warhorse, Iron Maiden, and many more from his extensive career.”

The statement further indicated that Paul’s health would dictate how many performances he could undertake, assuring that doctors were doing everything possible for him to regain his mobility. The manager elaborated on Paul’s upcoming plans:

“In early June, Paul will return to Croatia for continued treatment and preparation for the tour, in addition to signing autograph cards for pre-ordered Warhorse CDs and being interviewed by numerous media outlets eager to discuss the new Warhorse album.”

In addition to his various musical collaborations, Paul Di’Anno published his autobiography, “The Beast,”in 2010. He performed at venues like the Bikers Beer Factory in Croatia. His solo discography includes notable albums such as “The Masters,””The Living Dead,”and “Beyond the Maiden.”
