While it may seem like this iteration of Nessie has extraterrestrial origins, having allied with the Serpoians, it’s notable that even the Serpoian fused with Nessie referred to itself as an UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animal), a term frequently used in Japan to describe cryptids.
In a fascinating twist, Dandadan’s portrayal of Nessie measures only 3.5 meters in length, significantly smaller than its purported Scottish counterpart, which can reportedly range from 7.5 to 30 meters based on sightings. Both versions share a similar appearance, resembling plesiosaurs with elongated necks and stout bodies featuring four flippers and a tail. However, the supernatural powers possessed by Dandadan’s Nessie would astonish any historical Scots.

The full extent of Nessie’s capabilities was showcased in Episode 9, titled “Merge! Serpo Dover Demon Nessie!”Here, viewers learned that Nessie’s floods can alter the entire terrain, transforming solid walls, floors, and ceilings into liquid pools. Though these surfaces appear stable, contact with them results in immediate submersion, granting Nessie unparalleled mobility to move undetected beneath the ground or through structural features.
Additionally, Nessie is a proficient swimmer with gills distributed along its body, allowing it to thrive in the very floods it generates.
High-Compression Water Blasts
Nessie’s signature attack mimics the striking visuals of Godzilla’s atomic breath—those powerful blasts are bursts of highly compressed water. These attacks have devastating consequences, as seen when Momo was caught in the crossfire in Episode 8, resulting in significant destruction. Remarkably, Nessie killed a Serpoian effortlessly in the subsequent episode. However, before unleashing these formidable blasts, Nessie must absorb water through its gills, which means its ability has to be replenished like “ammo.”Crucially, Nessie can launch water blasts both in water and on land, provided they are fully charged.

While Nessie possesses formidable abilities, it does present certain vulnerabilities. Despite its flooding capabilities ensuring it remains in its element, the process of generating high-compression blasts requires a charging period during which it is vulnerable. With some strategic dodging, if an opponent can evade Nessie long enough during its recharge, they would have an opportunity to attack.
Nessie’s unpredictable behavior also contributes to its weaknesses. Its aggressive disposition makes it hostile to all, including its Serpoian allies, thereby creating opportunities for distraction. Moreover, Nessie exhibits a level of instinctual behavior rather than intelligence; in Episode 8, for instance, it fired a blast without thoroughly searching for Momo after sensing her. This instinctive nature indicates that strategic thinking can effectively counteract brute force in dealing with the creature.
“His attack power is amazing, but he’s so stupid he attacks everything in sight,”a Serpoian remarked during an encounter with Nessie.
Seiko Ayase’s Connection to Nessie
Momo’s Grandmother’s Bat: A Tribute to Nessie
Sharp-eyed fans of Dandadan may have noticed that the bat wielded by Seiko Ayase bears the inscription “Nessie’s Strength”(ネッシーの力). However, this does not imply any intrinsic relationship between Seiko or her bat and the legendary creature. The bat was named after Nessie as a nod to Momo; during their training, when Seiko asked Momo to identify the strongest creature, she responded with “Nessie.”This inspired Seiko to name the bat to demonstrate the application of a particular psychic power to Momo.
