Poppy: A Reflection on Work-Life Balance

“She’s a person who thinks that peeing is a luxury that you don’t necessarily need to do.”

Mythic Quest - Ashly Burch

ScreenRant: Mythic Quest season 4 heavily focuses on work-life balance. Did either of you bring personal experiences to the writer’s room or on screen?

Megan Ganz: Ashly and I are totally balanced.

Ashly Burch: We’ve ascended.

Megan Ganz: What I actually mean is that we often embody the opposite. The pandemic forced many to confront how deeply intertwined their self-worth is with their careers. In representing a contemporary workplace, we realized the importance of discussing work-life balance.

Moreover, Poppy is an ideal character to explore this theme. She embodies extreme dedication—so much so that she views basic needs, like taking a break, as luxuries. This mindset illustrates how engrossing one’s work can become, creating a feedback loop of obsession and productivity.

This season portrays the consequences of removing that work, specifically in the relationship dynamics between collaborators. We particularly highlight the balance between sharing personal life and maintaining professionalism, especially evident in relationships like those of Dana and Rachel, and Poppy and Ian.

Excitement Over Rachel and Dana’s Development

“Once you answer the question of will they or won’t they, then you get to tell actual stories that aren’t just are they going to kiss or not?”

ScreenRant: What was it like for you exploring that part of Rachel and Dana’s relationship?

Ashly Burch: I truly enjoy this development. Initially, I was against the idea of them kissing in season 2, but my perspective has changed dramatically. Once the central will-they-or-won’t-they question is resolved, we can delve into meaningful narratives pertinent to committed relationships.

This season, Rachel and Dana’s dynamic offers relatable stories that reflect real-life relationship challenges, such as income disparities and future planning—issues many couples face. With both Megan and I being married, our experiences further enrich these storylines.

Megan Ganz: The youthfulness of your characters amidst significant life transitions highlights the intricacies of timing and compatibility in relationships. We aim to showcase their complexities beyond merely defining them through their romance.

Crafting the Murder Mystery Episode

“The worst is a whodunnit that when you get to the end, people are like ‘Oh, really, that’s ending?’”

ScreenRant: Can you discuss the filming process for the murder mystery episode?

Megan Ganz: It was incredibly enjoyable to create. We initially needed a scenario to gather Ian and Poppy’s boyfriend, leading us to merge ideas for a game night with a murder mystery theme. As a huge fan of this genre, I relished the opportunity to contribute.

Our focus was on ensuring the episode delivered a satisfying conclusion, something crucial for a murder mystery. Ashly’s participation during writing helped refine our approach, ensuring we nailed the tone. The casting and their enthusiasm for dressing up really elevated the filming experience.

Ashly Burch: Filming on a boat and slipping into character was particularly fun. This led me to ponder the need for a well-tailored suit in my personal life!
