Exploring Marvel’s ‘What If…?’: Did It Ever Find Its True Identity?

What If…? Season 3: A Shift in Perspective

Following the exhilarating finale of What If…?, it has become increasingly evident that the series transcended its original anthology format. Viewers were treated to captivating snippets of beloved multiversal variant heroes, all under the watchful gaze of the Watcher, who has now been officially named Uatu.

Warning: Spoilers for What If…? Season 3, including the finale, follow.

The Role of Uatu: Evolution and Impact

Uatu has been a central figure in What If…? since its inception, serving as both narrator and occasionally a pivotal character who intervenes in the multiverse. His initial involvement saw him assembling an unlikely group of heroes to thwart humanity’s destruction. As Season 3 reached its conclusion, however, it became clear that the show was, in fact, Uatu’s journey of growth, with the multiversal tales serving as enriching supplementary narratives.

While I appreciated the exploration of Uatu’s personal history, particularly his conflict with the Eminence—his mentor figure—the shift towards a more personal narrative has led to some mixed feelings regarding the overall impact of What If…?

Marvel’s Ambitious Undertaking: A Mixed Reception

There were moments when I found What If…? to be Marvel’s boldest and most imaginative venture, yet other episodes, such as the peculiar storyline featuring Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck, left me questioning the creative choices behind them. While there were aspects I genuinely enjoyed—particularly the arcs involving Stephen Strange—it’s apparent that the series struggled to define its core identity.

Initially envisioned as an anthology, the narrative shifted once Captain Carter emerged as a recurring character, leading to speculation that her story was intended to be the focal point. Ultimately, it appeared that the series had aimed to intertwine her journey with Uatu’s, showcasing their mutual growth. By the time of the finale, it was unmistakable: What If…? was fundamentally about the Watcher discovering his connection to humanity and his heroes, culminating in his eventual intervention.

Character Development: Opportunities Missed

The glaring issue, however, is that Uatu’s character arc only began to take shape during the last three episodes. Prior to that, he functioned primarily as a passive observer, which detracted from both the completeness of the multiversal narratives and the depth of Uatu’s development. Although Marvel attempted a dual approach to storytelling, it left both aspects feeling underexplored. I yearned for more elaboration on the multiversal heroes and a deeper dive into Uatu’s evolution. A clearer narrative regarding his identity would have amplified the emotional weight of his evolution from anonymity to engagement.

A Final Reflection on What If…?

As What If…? officially concludes, it becomes apparent that it would have been more impactful had the series presented Uatu’s story from the outset. If his inner struggles and the significance of his covenant had been woven into the narrative from the beginning, it could have delivered a more cohesive experience. Although Uatu has been part of the series from its inception, he did not assert himself as the main character until the culmination of the finale. By that juncture, it felt too late for a transformative understanding of his character, which is regrettable given the profound questions he grapples with, such as his deep connection to humanity despite his vast cosmic powers.

While I anticipate Uatu’s return in upcoming projects like Avengers: Secret Wars, What If…? had its successes as well as its stumbling blocks throughout its journey. Ultimately, it leaves us with cherished moments, yet an awareness of what could have been.
