A Category 6 hurricane is classified as a tropical storm with wind speeds exceeding 192 mph. This classification was established by civil engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Robert Simpson in 1971 through the creation of the “Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.”This scale originally consisted of five categories, with intensity levels increasing at wind speeds above 157 mph.
Due to significant climate change over recent years, meteorologists now warn of the potential for a Category 6 hurricane. Currently, Hurricane Milton, categorized as a Category 5 storm, is barreling towards the coast of Florida at more than 160 mph.
Hurricane Milton is anticipated to make landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast by October 9, 2024, and experts speculate that its current intensity could push it into Category 6 territory.
In 2004, CBS aired a two-part miniseries titled “Category 6: Day of Destruction,”directed by filmmaker Dick Lowry. The series presented a fictional scenario involving three massive storms merging into an unprecedented Category 6 hurricane poised to strike Chicago. The first installment premiered on CBS on November 14, 2004, followed by the second part three days later.

In the series, Andy Goodman, a retired chief meteorologist, and his companion, Tornado Tommy, are the first to observe the alarming changes occurring in the Arctic Ocean.
Meanwhile, Mitch Benson, responsible for electrical operations, detects unusual demands on Chicago’s power grid due to intense heat waves. Engineer Dan London warns the team of impending dangers, but their concerns fall on deaf ears among corrupt officials.
As reporter Amy Harkin investigates the company’s shortcomings, she uncovers the imminent threat looming over Chicago. Amid a catastrophic power outage coinciding with the approach of a Category 6 hurricane, the characters rush to protect the city from this unprecedented disaster.
“Category 6: Day of Destruction”received one of CBS’s highest ratings in two years, gathering 19.4 million viewers during its premiere week, and was praised for its impressive special effects. In November 2005, it was followed by a sequel titled “Category 7: The End of the World.”
